The Summer Transfer Rumour Round-up Thread

Back in for D.Ball.

Hope not, we need better. Anyone who couldn't get in our team at CH ahead of Wilson last season can't be very good, and same could be said for anyone not able to displace an out of position Halliday at DM. We now have better options at DM, and hopefully we bring in another CH before the window shuts.

Yep. Agree with all of that. What we need is a Marvin Andrews-type CB who can defend set pieces for starters.

Yeh, seems a strange one now that we have JB, Rossiter and Halliday for DM?. I wouldn't see him play CH in front of what we have although I have said before I liked him playing as spare man at the back but as I said, we have cover there now.

What I would say though is that I feel he is comfortable and effective as the spare man at the back, maybe MW fancies him as cover for JB??. Big Clint looked solid and seems like your typical "no messing" CH, not sure if MW would want two in that mould?.

Think that's unfair, it wasn't a case that he couldn't get in ahead of Wilson but more that we wanted him playing CDM.

Anyone who watched the first few games Ball played at CB would recognise that he was the best CB on the books last year. Physically stronger than both Kiernan and Wilson, better distribution than both, read the game better than both, better in the tackle than both.

Ball would be a definite upgrade on both Wilson AND Kiernan, undoubtedly for me.

Warburton just decided to use him in CDM rather than at the back.

I take it that the Spurs boss sees it differently.

BTW, something we should not forget here: Ball was and is a youngster with hardly any great competitive experience under his belt. Kiernan and Wilson had not been played together before, and only Wilson "some" experience at a club like ours. They were told to adapt to a style they probably never faced before, and mostly against half-decent teams with quite a bit of experience. It took them some time to get used to it, at least at a certain standard. Ball was in and out of that side, and in varying roles. So how can we possibly judge the way a player might develope with more and vastly experienced tutors at his side?

BTW, I am not sure whether we actually look at another CH, as Crooks will come in and can play there. Which would leave us with 4 players for 2 positions. Anyone coming in here will possibly be just back-up himself, rather than a replacement ... and given the above, I don't think we do need replacements for Wilson and/or Kiernan as badly some some may think.

A Marvin Andrews type centre back has as much chance of playing in a Mark Warburton side as me and you.

I completely agree with you that Ball looked (slightly) better than dumb and dumber last season at Centre back. However Warburton thought differently and he sees them more often than we do. For me Ball was far better than Halliday at defensive midfielder as well, but again Warburton thought not. Hence why I described him in the terms I did.

If he wasnt good enough to get a regular run at either position last season, with the improvements we have made in both positions he will be even further down the order if we brought him back this season surely?

We will see what the Spurs boss thinks of him soon enough so not something I am going to speculate on at this time.

As I have said in my reply to Craig above, I thought Ball looked better than RK, DW or AH, but MW clearly disagreed. It is on that judgement (i.e. Warburtons not mine) that I cant see us bringing him back for a second season given we have improved our options in this area.

Time will tell if Crooks is being lined up for CH, to me it looks like he is Barton's cover at DM as that is where he played well for AS last season by all reports. I think we still need a starting CH to partner Hill. See if we can get rid of DW before the window closes, he is our Efe and will again cost us goals and points if he is played consistently. I expect Hill to take charge and talk RK through the game and we may see a much improved version of RK this season as a result, but I would be much happier with a quality CH coming in.

He made 15 appearances or rather starts. That leaves 40 odd games where he could have started at cb but didn't.

I think we can assume Warburton doesn't agree with you.

I would take him I think to challenge for a place.

But it looks like Warburton thinks we had 2 better ch last year.
