DUNDEE UNITED have binned defender Gavin Gunning following his bizarre actions during last weekend’s defeat to Inverness.

The Irishman provoked fan fury by picking the ball up and walking off mid-way through the second half.

Gunning, who had suffered an injured foot, collected a pass with his hands before walking towards the dugout clutching the ball.

Bemused team-mates and Caley players watched him as he went off before coming back on to the pitch for treatment.

Gunning was then replaced by Sean Dillon.

SunSport understands that in the last 48 hours since the incident became a social media hit, United have been inundated with complaints about the former Motherwell defender’s actions.

With the team now facing relegation, his decision to walk off the park mid-game has been viewed as a sign United have thrown in the towel.

Furious club bosses held a meeting today and a decision has been taken to boot Gunning out.

In a statement United said: “Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the Club will not make any further comment.”
