Heartbroken dad of tragic teen Sarah Goldie reveals family's anguish: 'We knew Sarah was dead from moment she went missing'

SARAH, from Renfrew, was reported missing a month ago and police confirmed today a body recovered from the River Clyde in Glasgow was that of the 18-year-old.

A TRAGIC teen’s dad has revealed that her heartbroken family knew she was dead from the moment she went missing.

Police said they discovered Sarah Goldie’s body on Sunday, April 10 at around 4.10pm in the River Clyde.

The 18-year-old was found near to BBC Scotland headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow.

Her dad Gordon, 48, said: “It has been a missing person’s inquiry but they have to call it that.

“We just knew from the start what had happened. I am into my fishing and her mum is an ex-nurse so we know what happens when someone goes in the water.

“The officers had Sarah’s DNA from a toothbrush so we have been spared having to go and identify her. No-one wants that.

“I was at the football at Ibrox on March 11 when I was notified. I went to Helen Street, Govan and an officer took me into a room and sat me down.

“He told me it was a missing person inquiry but I just knew. Even now I can remember every word he said as if it was yesterday.”

Gordon paid tribute to the rescue team who discovered Sarah. He also said her family had been told by authorities that her fall into the river had been “intentional”.

He said: “I spoke to George Parsonage at the Glasgow Humane Society over the weeks and he was a great solace to me.

“At first, we thought she may be found after two weeks but when I got to three weeks, we knew it could happen at any time.

“I saw two fluorescent jacketed officers at my door and I knew what was coming.”

Gordon – who also has two sons – said: “I can’t thank the police officers and the Glasgow Humane Society enough.

“They have all been so sympathetic and helpful at the worst possible time. My wife and I have forgotten to eat over the weeks but out friends and family have rallied round us.

“People have been bringing us soup and curries and just looking out for us. Again, we just can’t thank them enough.”

Previously, Gordon and Lynne posted on Facebook, “Sarah’s body was recovered from the River Clyde yesterday afternoon by George Parsonage and his team from the Glasgow Humane Society.

“We shall be eternally grateful to them. Her identity has been confirmed.”

The teenager had been reported missing from her Renfrew home on Friday, March 11.

She left home about 11am on the morning she disappeared. She took a taxi from Glasgow to Renfrew, arriving near the former Dean Park Hotel about 6pm.

It is thought she got a bus back to Glasgow shortly after arriving in Renfrew in a taxi.

About an hour and forty minutes later, at 7.40pm, police received a call about a young woman in the River Clyde. Sarah’s bag was also found.

On the same evening, two men jumped into the Clyde in a bid to rescue a woman they believed had been seen in the water close to the Broomielaw near the King George V Bridge.

The woman was not found by either the men or the emergency services who attended the scene.

Gordon previously changed his profile picture on Facebook to one of his late daughter.

He also created a video of family pictures as a tribute on YouTube.

He wrote: “I was up a lot of last night putting this together.

“Lots of tears doing it, but lots of smiles at the end too.

“These are some of Lynne and I’s favourite pictures of Sarah. The music is quite nice too. Enjoy.”

Mr Goldie said his daughter spent the Friday she disappeared with a friend “having a normal, girly lunch” in The Social in Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square.

He described Sarah as a “very, very friendly girl and said it was unusual for her not to be in touch for a ‘few hours, never mind a few days.’

He said the family – himself, wife Lynne and Sarah’s two older brothers – had been torn apart by her disappearance.

He added: “They went back to the friend’s flat in Pollokshields then she got a taxi back to Renfrew at about 5.30pm.

“She arrived round the corner from home at Dean Park – it’s cheaper to get dropped there than to the door – at about 6pm.”

But Sarah, who worked in Claire’s Accessories in Braehead, never arrived home.

The family think she “turned around” and went back to Glasgow, possibly by bus, but have no idea why.

River rescue hero George Parsonage had previously vowed never to give up in the search for the 18-year-old.

The Royal Humane Society chairman said: “Every day, every hour, is like a month for the family.”

“You must find the person as soon as you can for their sake.”

Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and a post mortem will take place to establish how she died.

Sad Sad story. Whether he was a Rangers or a Morton supporter is insignificant I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

I take it that will be George's son, maybe also called George ? As far as I remember the father had retired a good few years ago.

Yes it is so so sad a waste of a young life.If there are no suspicious circumstances something way untoward must have happened to have a young girl enter the water of her own accord can't imagine how the parents are feeling.

George took over from his Dad many years ago.
