Delighted to confirm that @AirdrieoniansFC have signed @RangersFC midfielder Jordan Thompson on initial 28-day loan welcome @x88_j #Diamond

RANGERS can tonight confirm that midfielder Jordan Thompson has joined Airdrieonians on loan.

The former Manchester United academy player from Northern Ireland has joined the Diamonds on a 28-day loan.

He will be available to play for Eddie Wolecki Black’s next match which is a home tie against Ayr United at the Excelsior Stadium in League One.

Thompson has been a mainstay in Ian Durrant’s under-20 side this season and has featured for the first team twice, coming off the bench at Ibrox against Dumbarton and Alloa Athletic.

I'm disappointed we haven't seen more of him. While Warburton doesn't seem too reticent to playing teenagers, he does tend to pretty much exclusively pick the loan ones, rather than our own ones. Thomson was the manager's own signing, so that's a bit mystifying - rather than inheriting players he doesn't think are up to it.

I'm not wholly convinced that Thompson was the manager's own signing. He wasn't originally signed as a 1st team player but was signed in the Academy for the development team. I am led to believe that the signing was approved by Craig Mulholland but that he very quickly was moved to 1st team training when they saw his quality.

he's looked by far the most promising of the youngsters on the basis of the glimpses we've had thus far. Looks a stand out playing with the young 'uns too. But he is young: wasn't it was only when they got a proper look at him in training that he was promoted to the first team squad?

Correct.

I have the full story on how he ended up at Rangers - but won't regale it.

What I do know is that when Rangers were approached about him they reached out to Brian McClair to ask if it would be worth Rangers while bringing him in on trial. McClair's response was "Nope, no point in bringing him in on trial. Just sign him because he is THAT good".

Rangers looked at him for no more than a couple of days and had the contract drawn up. They have very high hopes for the lad.
