CALLUM McGregor was picked up for alleged drink-driving after a night out with friends in Glasgow city centre.

CELTIC star Callum McGregor has been arrested at 3am for alleged drink-driving.

The player, who has just completed a speeding ban, was pulled over in the early hours of yesterday, asked to provide a breath sample then taken to a Glasgow police station.

It is understood the Scotland Under-21 ace was on a night out with friends in the city centre, where he mingled with fans and posed for photographs.

McGregor’s latest brush with the law comes after a court chose to give him a four-month ban for speeding instead of a heavier penalty last August.

That decision meant the starlet was left with nine points on his licence – meaning he could be in hot water if the drink-driving rap is proven.

A source said: “When McGregor was stopped he would have been familiar with the routine of dealing with traffic cops.

“He was cautioned and ended up being brought to London Road police station. He was allowed to leave but will be expecting a court date soon.”

One fan tweeted a selfie with McGregor on Sauchiehall Street, believed to have been taken just hours before his arrest.

Police will send a report to the procurator fiscal and McGregor is expected to appear in court later.

This latest controversy will go down badly with Hoops fans after a week of disappointment on the pitch, where Celtic were beaten by Ross County and Aberdeen in crunch ties.

Last August the 22-year-old faced court for driving his Mercedes C-Class at 69mph on the 50mph A725 near Bellshill, Lanarkshire.

The star, who in 2014 signed a five-year deal with the Hoops, went on trial at Hamilton Justice of the Peace Court where he claimed police equipment was dodgy.

But following evidence from officers and expert witnesses, McGregor was convicted by JP Daniel McLaughlin and banned from driving for four months and fined £400.

During the trial, defence lawyer Graham Walker claimed McGregor needed his licence to get to training and to carry out charity work on behalf of the club.

McGregor began as a youth player at Celtic and spent a year on loan at English side Notts County in the 2013-14 season. He returned to Celtic and scored on his top-team debut against KR Reykjavik in a Champions League qualifier in 2014.

He was also called up to Gordon Strachan’s Scotland squad ahead of a qualifier against Germany.

Last night police said: “A 22-year-old man is the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal for alleged road traffic offences after being stopped by officers in Robroyston, Glasgow, at 3am on Friday morning. He was released and is expected to appear at court at a later date.”

There was no response when the Record knocked on the door of McGregor’s home.
