Manchester United open talks with representatives of José Mourinho

• BBC claims Mourinho is ‘excited by prospect’ of taking over at Old Trafford

Manchester United have refused to comment on reports that the club have held talks with representatives of José Mourinho, with the former Chelsea manager said to be increasingly hopeful of succeeding Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in December, has been tipped as a potential replacement for the Dutchman after a difficult season for the 20-time champions. On Friday, the BBC claimed that negotiations with 53-year-old’s representatives have begun, although the report stated that “no agreement has been reached, and the club have made no comment”.

“Dutchman Van Gaal, 64, is expected to leave United at the end of the season - one year earlier than scheduled,” it added. “That would leave the way clear for Mourinho, who is known to be excited by the prospect of taking over at Old Trafford.

“The United hierarchy are thought to be keen to respond after Manchester City secured the services of coveted former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola earlier this week.”

The report also states that Ryan Giggs, who took over as manager on an interim basis in April 2014 following the sacking of David Moyes and has been working as assistant to Van Gaal, would be unlikely to be as willing to work with the former Chelsea manager. If appointed, Mourinho would resume his often fractious rivalry with Guardiola, who Manchester City this week confirmed will succeed Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium in the summer. The former Barcelona coach frequently clashed with the Portuguese when he was in charge of Real Madrid.

Last month, Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes branded a report claiming the Portuguese wrote to United regarding his credentials to be the next manager as “ridiculous and absurd”. Mourinho was said to have sent United a six-page letter in which he outlined why he would be a suitable fit for the position. “It does not occur to anyone that a coach like José Mourinho can write letters to clubs offering their services. It is absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd,” read his statement.

Van Gaal’s position came under increased scrutiny after defeats by Stoke on Boxing Day and then again after the 1-0 home defeat against Southampton on 23 January, which marked an 11th Premier League game in succession that United had failed to score at home in the first half. However, a comprehensive victory over Derby in the FA Cup was followed by a 3-0 win over Stoke last week that kept United in contention for a top-four finish.

Yet with his side due to face champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, it appears the pressure will once again be on Van Gaal.

The problem with Man Utd is Van Gaal didn't bring in his own No.2 and took Giggs on for a popularity vote and the two clearly don't agree on how to play the game. Man U should just give the gig to Giggs (pardon the pun) as he knows how Man U want to play. He needs to bring in Rene Meulessteen and Mike Phelen. Guardiola was inexperienced when he took over at Barca so this "Giggs hasn't got experience" argument is not valid for me.

Mourinho is desperate for the Old Trafford job but it will be Moyes & Van Gaal take 3. They wouldn't lose much but it would be 1-0 every week not playing attacking football. The Man U fans are split, they want to stop city and he will probably run them close but I think Giggs could also.

Pochettino linked to Man utd today. Again the BBC running a story that they have spoken to his people, the same way as they have spoken to Mourinho. Pretty poor if they have, they should just get rid of LVG first unless they have an internal agreement that is hush about leaving at the end of the season.

Cant see Pochettino going to Man Utd now though, Spurs are in a far better position right now and he has done a great job building HIS team in the last 6 months and they are a banker for top 4.

The season that Sky hype the dug-out more than on the field ?

Yep, they've even progressed to the Valencia dug-out now? I've had no interest in Valencia CF since we played them a few years ago...now I know who sits in the dug-out for them b'gawd! I really couldn't care less.
