David Weir: Victory over Hibs was the launchpad...

...to a Championship winning run from Rangers.

DAVID WEIR reckons victory over Hibernian has been the springboard to Rangers’ recent run of form as they have stretched their lead at the top of the Championship.

The Light Blues saw their advantage in the title race whittled away late last year as they lost to Alan Stubbs’ side and Falkirk and drew with Livingston and Morton.

By the time the Gers take to the field at Cappielow on Monday night, they could be just two points clear of their nearest challengers in the standings.

But assistant manager Weir is confident his side can make it five wins on the spin as they look to take another step towards the Premiership.

He said: “If you look at the season as one season rather than looking at little individual parts, we had, in a lot of people’s eyes, a sticky spell, but it is just part of the season.

“It is part of the progress the team is making. It is still a young team, it is still learning and developing, we are still changing things, we are still adapting things and we are still trying to improve in certain areas.

“I think, within that, there will always be times when you are more productive than others.

“You refine what you are doing all the time and at the minute they are full of confidence and scoring goals and there are goals coming from all areas of the team and different personnel.

“Confidence is high, which is a massive thing and the Hibs game was obviously really important.

“It was a big game for us and the players played really well in it and got the result that they deserved.

“So I think they have taken a lot of confidence from that and gone on from there.”

After seeing off Hibs at Ibrox last month, Rangers have beaten Dumbarton, Cowdenbeath and Livingston in recent weeks as they have hit 19 goals in four outings.

And Weir is pleased they will head to Cappielow on the back of another impressive showing after cruising to victory over the Lions last weekend.

“The performance in the first half was really good and all the things that we had worked on and like to do came to fruition,” he told RangersTV.

“We were clinical in front of goal as well, which is obviously the ultimate thing.

“To go in 4-0 at half time, and it possibly could have been a couple more, was very pleasing. But, not just the score line, performance as well.

“There was intensity on the ball, we played quickly and played forward and then off the ball we worked really hard to get the ball back.

“Everything is a balance. We had the ball for the majority of the game but I also thought off the ball we worked really hard.”
