FOUR YEARS ago today Rangers signed Sone Aluko

Recommended Posts

Was it Aluko that paid out his contract so he could sign for us? Or something similar? It would be nice to have that kind of desire from players to come and join us again!

To be fair, Aluko had been the subject of a colourful newspaper account which declared that his family had passed the hat around to raise the cash which broke the deadlock with Aberdeen over his services.

That tale was liberally garnished with quotes from Aluko which were numerous and specific. On Friday, though, the Nigerian winger was as articulate in his denials of the story, which McCoist declared to be “very average” reporting.

Mind you, the Rangers manager only came close to details when he referred to the part of the story which claimed that Aluko had come up with £150,000 to get shot of Aberdeen’s claim on him. “He is paying absolutely nothing like that. If it’s a tenth of that, maybe – but it’s nothing like that,” said McCoist.

“There has been talk about the lad’s family and all that stuff, which I can tell you is absolute nonsense. What the lad has done is make a contribution to the compensation which is not really unusual in this day and age.

“More importantly to me, it is really refreshing that he has shown a commitment to want to come and play for us that much.”

Aluko really was an inspired piece of business.

Oduwa could do with examining his more direct style and shooting prowess.

The deal itself was innovative and set-up in such a way that increased chances of high player motivation levels and subsequent performance.

It also worked out for all parties.
