Mark Warburton: SPFL should extend the top-tier

Recommended Posts

Again, what would the smaller clubs gain?Re arranging the deck chairs No?

A more competitive league, and perhaps more influence, rather than the cabal at the moment? It seems to be a select few that are inhibiting change. Could the rest force change by creating a separate league?

Are we one of the smaller clubs?

Only last week, the man who strides across Scottish football commentary like a colossus, Jim Spence opined both Aberdeen and ra Sellik are too big for Scottish football. Further, he suggested both should leave and seek the necessary competition in England.

The guy is an idiot, you know that.

I can assure you that Neil Doncaster has always been in favour of a 16 or 18 team top division but the Clubs who pay his wages are not, or at least the SPL Clubs are not.

However, having adjusted to the finances of a Rangers free SPL for the past 4 seasons, surely there will never be a better time to change? There will be little or no difference between two home games v Celtic or one against each of the old firm.

A 16-team top league sounds great. I actually like the split because it gives the league more 'big' games. However, there needs to be an incentive for the lower half teams: a European spot perhaps? In Belgium the league splits, and the points are halved (and rounder up or down), so teams essentially start again, but with a little advantage depending on their pre-split form. It means that there is competition for places.

If a select group of clubs are inhibiting change, can the rest not separate, creating a new league?

The minor clubs have a cosy wee cabal going as well.

More competitve leagues? They arent interested.

More influence? Why for what .They are happy as they are, just leave us alone is their motto.

Apathy is a downward spiral. Scottish football is dead if it's as you suggest. If there is a choice between death and change, surely they'll vote for change?

That's spot on, there are too many so called "senior" football teams in Scotland who are little more than village/pub teams who have no interest in being anywhere other than where they are at present.

Two divisions of 16 is more than we can accommodate; one 16 team league and regional leagues would be a far better option.

Considering these teams have had this outlook for around 50 years or more,Id suggest you post is a tad melodramatic, with all due respect.

What would be in it for the smaller clubs?

Atm some of the smaller clubs have no chance of getting into the top league, least increasing the size of the leagues, increases their chances of getting promotion. Ok some clubs are happy with the status quo and have no ambition, but some have. Increased league and increase their share of the TV revenues. At the end of the day it should be about what the customers wants. but i suppose that's too radical in Scottish Football.
