FIFA president Sepp Blatter under investigation after Swiss attorney general launches criminal proceedings.

Great I hope they start weeding out these corrupt bar-stewards. Plattini also named in taking 1.3 million.

Weed them all out and get them in jail.

I think both sides are all bought and paid for. I don't think Platini is an angel either and has come up with some crazy ideas in the last few years.

I like the idea of a ex footballer in charge there, and thought Ginola was the most genuine contender.

McDonald's and Coca-Cola call on Sepp Blatter to step down immediately but FIFA chief refuses to budge

HEAVYWEIGHT sponsors ramp up pressure on under-fire FIFA president but brazen 79-year-old Swiss administrator digs in his heels again.

BLUE-CHIP sponsor McDonald's has joined with Coca-Cola and financial services firm Visa to call on FIFA President Sepp Blatter to resign immediately in the wake of the revelation that Swiss authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the head of world football's governing body.

McDonald's said Blatter's resignation would be "in the best interest of the game".

In an e-mail statement the burger chain giant said: "The events of recent weeks have continued to diminish the reputation of FIFA and public confidence in its leadership."

The comments came shortly after Coca-Cola made the same plea for Blatter to step down.

A company statement said: "For the benefit of the game, the Coca-Cola Company is calling for FIFA president Joseph Blatter to step down immediately so that a credible and sustainable reform process can begin in earnest.

"Every day that passes, the image and reputation of FIFA continues to tarnish. FIFA needs comprehensive and urgent reform, and that can only be accomplished through a truly independent approach."

Credit card firm Visa – another major sponsor – also joined the growing call for Blatter to go now.

But Blatter's US-based attorney said in a late-night statement from New York that his client will not resign.

He said: "While Coca-Cola is a valued sponsor of FIFA, Mr Blatter respectfully disagrees with its position and believes firmly that his leaving office now would not be in the best interest of FIFA nor would it advance the process of reform and therefore, he will not resign."

The 79-year-old Swiss administrator is due to leave his post in February after agreeing to step aside in the wake of the scandal that rocked FIFA in May.

Blatter has already resisted calls for him to go immediately from politicians and other leading footballing figures but with three major sponsors now joining the bandwagon he may find his position quickly becomes untenable.

English FA chairman Greg Dyke said this should now be the end of the road for Blatter.

He said: "I think this is a game changer. It doesn't matter what Mr Blatter says now, if the people who pay for FIFA want a change they will get a change.

"What is important is that it isn't just about Mr Blatter standing down, it's about making sure there is a comprehensive and effective reform programme. So for those of us who want fundamental change this is good news."

He has no option to go with the amount of money those sponsors put in. It would crash FIFA. That's why I would think there is a lot going on in the background at the moment with the biggest 20 clubs in Europe looking at some sort of breakaway.
