Thompson buys Newcastel Jets

Recommended Posts

DUNDEE UNITED chairman Stephen Thompson has bid £2.5million to buy Australian football club Newcastle Jets.

Nathan Tinkler, the Jets owner, revealed to Fox Sports that a deal has almost been completed and he expected Thomson to take over in the near future.

"We've had an offer in for a couple of weeks from Dundee United, " he said. "That offer is well in excess of the debts of the club and I've asked the administrator to get that sale done and that will see everyone get paid. Then, I can move on."

I think that is incorrect. Unless mistaken I believe the rules are that you can't own a second team that could play in direct competition with your other owned team eg, Ashley couldn't own us AND Newcastle as we could potentially have met each other in the Champions League (no laughing...) or the Europa League.

We cant meet Newcastle Jets other than in the World Club Cup - but I don't think that is an issue.

I thought it was a straight one team and one team only with the SFA regardless of where the other team played.

Anyone know the rule quoted anywhere ?
