pete 2,499 Posted August 25, 2015 Share Posted August 25, 2015 RANGERS under-20s return to SPFL Development League action this evening with a game against Inverness Caley Thistle. This is the third match of the competitive season for Ian Durrant’s youngsters after drawing 2-2 with Hearts on the opening day before defeating St Mirren 4-3 in a thriller a week later. With no game last week, they travelled south to take on Fleetwood in a friendly match which they won 3-1 thanks to goals from Ross McCrorie, Danny Stoney and a trialist. In the two meetings against Inverness last season, Rangers won the home tie 1-0 while there was a 3-3 draw between the two sides in the Highlands. Kick-off tonight at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium in Dumbarton is at 6pm, and you can keep up to date with all the action by following @RFC_Youth on Twitter. That's a strong U20 side! I wonder if Mark Warburton has asked Durrant to play Aird at right back because he'll be RB back-up for Tavernier? Goals from Dylan Dykes and Robbie Crawford were enough to overcome the long-travelled Highlanders who only arrived at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium a mere 30 minutes prior to the scheduled 6pm kick-off. Rangers early domination of the ball was truly something to behold, and it took them just seven minutes to breach the Caley backline. Great work from the impressive Josh Jeffries saw him find the stretching Dylan Dykes on the edge of the area, and his shot had enough power on it to beat the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Daniel Hoban to put Ian Durrant’s youngsters ahead. Inverness had nothing in answer to Rangers great early play in the opening minutes, but they were close to a leveller on their first foray forward as Calum Ferguson brought the best out of Robby McCrorie when his shot from the right was wonderfully turned behind for a corner. From the resulting kick, Jason Brown was left unmarked on the penalty spot but he could only find only McCrorie’s arms with his shot as Rangers were served a reminder that there were actually two teams in the game. At the other end, the other McCrorie – Ross – came close to making it 2-0 when he picked up a corner at the back post before dancing around the attentions of defender Cameron Gilchrist and firing towards goal but he found only the arms of Hoban who gathered comfortably. Fraser Aird once again found himself stationed at right-back, but he took every opportunity given to him to break forward and he came close to a spectacular goal with a 25-yard shot which slipped just over the top of the bar. The half-hour mark almost saw Rangers extend their advantage thanks to a comical moment at the back from Inverness. Gilchrist’s ball back to Hoban was far too strong and only the intervention of the panicked defender to pluck his own ball off the goalline prevented his side falling further behind. The final chance of the first half fell again to Aird with a free-kick from 25-yards, and while he got it up and down over the defensive wall, Hoban had no trouble in gathering the effort. The second half began with two wing attacks from firstly Andy Murdoch and then Scott Roberts – who skipped by two Inverness players in the process – but on both occasions there were no takers for their crosses across the six-yard line. The pressure continued to build however from Rangers, and they made it 2-0 two minutes short of the hour mark through Robbie Crawford. Fraser Aird took a quick corner out on the far side and found Crawford just inside the area. After feigning once to shoot, his second effort sailed by Hoban and into the back of the net to give Durrant’s boys a richly deserved two-goal advantage. Crawford came within a whisker of making it three seconds later with a speculative effort from 25 yards, but it was just over the top of the bar once again. The intense pace of the game was always going to take its toll at some point, and sure enough the temp began to drop and the goalmouth action dried up, although Caley almost found a route back into the game when Alasdair Sutherland found space for a shot but Robby McCrorie gathered with ease. But 2-0 it finished in the most comfortable of fashion, and the youngsters now prepare for the visit of Motherwell next Tuesday.
