THE midfielder was subject to a catalogue of vile online abuse after he confirmed he wanted to leave the Edinburgh club for Rangers.

POLICE are investigating death threats and online abuse directed at Hibs star Scott Allan after he handed in a transfer request.

The talented 23-year-old became the target of vile comments yesterday after the Easter Road side confirmed he wanted to leave the club.

Allan has been targeted by boyhood heroes Rangers who have already had two bids for the player knocked back.

In a statement released on Twitter, Police Scotland said: “We are aware of offensive comments made online towards Hibernian footballer Scott Allan. Police officer enquiries are at an early stage.”

Hibernian also released a statement urging their supporters not to direct abuse at the footballer.

“Hibernian FC today asked Hibernian supporters to ensure they are respectful when commenting on any club matters on Twitter or any other form of social media," it read.

“This follows unacceptable tweets posted following the news that our player, Scott Allan, had handed in a transfer request.

“The club have been in contact with Police Scotland regarding the recent tweets and will support any subsequent police investigation.”

Allan was named the Scottish Championship’s Player of the Season and signed a two-year deal with Hibs in 2014. He previously played with Dundee United and West Bromwich Albion.

I suppose the polis need something to occupy themselves when we're not playing.

I think they are 100% correct in following this up. You just can't think you can say anything on-line and think you can get away with it.
