Sportswear retailer Sports Direct has overcome England’s early departure from the World Cup to deliver a 15.7 per cent jump in annual profits.

The chain, controlled by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, also said about 2,000 staff are in line for a slice of bonus share awards totalling about £36.7 million after the group hit its earnings targets.

Underlying profits came in at £383.2m for the year to 26 April, up from £331.1 a year earlier.

Revenues grew 4.7 per cent to £2.8 billion, despite footfall being hit by the unseasonably mild autumn weather.

Chief executive Dave Forsey said: “Trading since the period end has been in line with management expectations and will continue to be driven by improvements in product range and availability, optimisation of both our in-store and web offerings, the introduction of click and collect in the UK and further investment in our store portfolio.”

Yes his SD company is doing very well but in comparison sales of Rangers shirts will have bombed so he should just rip up that contract and move on to enjoying his success instead of holding on to it through sheer spite.

For some reason he is going out of his way to financialy damage us. It doesnt make good business sense to continue with the contract but he does so anyway. Theres a hidden agenda here, of that im sure.

He has just made 383mill profits. Do you really think he gives a shit about that wee bit of Rangers? I think he just thinks I will wait them out Rangers need the money more than I do.

Plus the fact do Rangers not pay for unsold strips?

Still means that Ashely is not really losing anything so he can hold on for 7 years if he wants.

It reminds me of the expression "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

could be but other clubs must look at Newcastle and Rangers and think F that for a game of sodjers.

Aye, but I wasn't referring to what other Clubs must think about it pete, I was referring to the fact that Sports Direct have managed to increase their profits by such a large margin despite all of the bad publicity they're getting from Rangers, Newcastle and also their ongoing bad publicity from using zero hour contracts.

I'm suggesting that maybe all of the bad publicity is actually helping them because if their company name is in newspapers across the UK every other day, then they're obviously getting A LOT of free advertising. And we all know that Ashley & Sports Direct LOVE free advertising. ;)
