Scottish Teams in Europe 2015-16

Recommended Posts

Europa League - Qualification

Alashkert FC 1 St.Johnstone 0 (Manasyan 59.)

Shkendija 79 1 Aberdeen 1 (Kirovski 84 / McGinn 79)

Apart from that ...

Cork 1 Knattspyrnufelag Reykjavik 1

Glenavo 1 Shakhter Soligorsk 2

Glentoran 1 MSK Zilina 4

Linfield 2 NSI Runavik 0

Skonto Riga 2 St. Patrick's 1

West Ham 3 Lusitanos 0

And on a sidenote, Spartans / Berwick lost 6-0 to Slovan Bratislava, but one has to look hard to actually find them on the football map. For despite the names, they are not a Scottish/English team.

Why are those two ties included in a list containing British teams?

Spartans are from Edinburgh. The team which lost last night are from Hamrun in Malta.

As usual they will all go out at the first hurdle to nobodies and be a complete and utter embarrassment. We are no better, arguably worse given our resources.

Aberdeen should get through this round and get Rijeka in Q2. Teams from the former Yugoslavia are in complete disarray at the moment so could go further.

St Johnstone and Aberdeen failing to beat teams Ive never heard of. Either those countries leagues are getting better or ours is getting worse or possibly both.

You just wonder though if they had had maybe 10 competitive league fixtures by now with a start of season around March then how would they have done.

I thought West Ham would have put at least 6 past that team but then saw it was pretty much a reserve team. A good full house at Upton Park to welcome Bilic (who isn't taking charge yet bizarrely) and to mark the last season at the old ground. Despite going to Upton Park on many occasions I am looking forward to moving to the new stadium.

As I said above, it is bizarre that teams compete for participation in European competition when they hardly had any preparation whatsoever. Season's just past, players returning from vacation, some have left, a few newbies come in and the team has to find its feet. It could well be that it is the same with the opposition, but if Scottish teams face up to those having essentially summer football, it sure puts them (or any other "victim") on a disadvantage. UEFA could cut this if they only play summer footie sides against one another, and pair the "pre-seasonists", but IMHO UEFA does not actually care here. This is the rabble they don't want at the later stages anyway ...

I actualy missed a few of the Tuesday games, the results have been added now and present a slightly better picture now.

Meanwhile, a story about UC Dublin and why the have been playing European footie despite being relegated last season. Essentially, much like West Ham via the Fair Play route.

These European qualifiers are always a sharp dose of reality. Scottish sides are poor. It's actually embarrassing how poor we are. And I don't know how long we can continue in this way.

The co-efficient is dropping like a stone and qualification for the tournament proper becomes more difficult every year.
