Sports Direct boycott Update

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see the RST, RangersFirst and maybe even other fans selling unofficial shirts, scarfs & hats solely for the purpose of buying shares and investing money directly into the Club, but to do it on the street they would need proper street traders licenses and to do it on Club property they would need the Club's blessing, which would essentially be an endorsement.

It may be morally an endorsement, the important thing would be would it be seen as a breach of contract between us and SD/RR, and if not it would be a great way of going forward. It would show Ashley that he doesn't hold all the cards in this dispute and that we can run down our outrageous notice period while still earning something from merchandise outwith his control.

The street traders licence surely should not be a problem either given what sort of rubbish is sold around our stadium on matchdays with said licences issued.

Boycotting is just wrong from a Rangers' point of view. I understand the need to relay our disgust about contracts to SD & MA by signing petitions etc., but this boycotting business is just weakening our position and strengthening SD's.

I would imagine that the current Rangers board definitely would allow the RST & RF to sell merchandise on Club property and that it wouldn't be an issue legally with SD/RR unless they were selling within a certain distance (probably 100yrds or 100mtrs) of the shop.

The problem is though, that on top of probably needing the yearly street traders licences (per seller), the fans groups would no doubt need to pay people to actually sell the goods, just as they've needed to pay people to hand out flyers because nobody wants to do the dirty/donkey work.

Edit: Apologies actually because I know plgsarmy and several others aren't shy when it comes to doing donkey work and thankless tasks.

Can you please explain how by not buying SD goods we are actually strengthening SD position?

Wrong. This is a joint venture and this board cannot be seen to be aiding and abetting a boycott.

In the original contract SD can buy us out for a %age of the previous year's profits. If there are no profits they get RR for a song.

What I said is actually not wrong at all mate. The Club could easily grant the fans groups permission to sell merchandise on Club property so long as it's done within the law.

As I said, the sellers would just need street traders licences and to be selling the goods outwith a certain distance from the shop for long-standing legal reasons.

C'mon Zappa, do you honestly believe that if during a period of boycott the club was to openly encourage a seller of alternate merchandize, this would be perceived as an okay business practice by SD?

And of RR boycott continues?

You have heard some people say that even during the boycott they will still buy their kids some merchandize. SD will still have reduced profits but we shall have nothing at all. For us to sell the merchandize that they give us would be cost-prohibitive.
