Remember the excitement of this time last season? We had a foot back in the big boys' playground, proper clubs from Edinburgh to brush aside whilst eyeing our Premiership detractors. Hibs were an absolute shambles, no management team, and no players. Hearts had blooded the lads and came good at the end of their previous 15 point punishment season. TV pays the piper and called the tune, they demanded a dramatic overture; both Hibs and Hearts at Ibrox in the space of 4 days. A strangled 2-1 victory over 'the first to wear the green', after extra time, was followed by the same scoreline reversal against the boys in maroon. A harbinger of a season where we finished third in a two horse race.

 

Tomorrow, the fixtures are published, will TV ensure an away start at a sun bathed Easter Road, or will one of the powerhouses of Renfrewshire grace the Ibrox turf? How about a tricky opener on the Palmerston plastic? What do Gersnetters want, what do you think we will receive?

I wouldn't mind another tough start to try and apply a bit of early pressure to our title challengers while forcing our own team to quickly find a high level of performance.

 

Some rumours that the list has been leaked and we're to face Dumbarton away and given we started with a home game last season, some sort of away fixture does seem probable. However, I think we'll be playing St Mirren, QotS or Hibs in the first game.

We played Alloa away from home first in September last season so I'd like to think we'll host them at Ibrox before we travel to deepest Clackmannanshire this term. But Rangers-hater Mike has a lot of friends in high places so may call in a favour of two of those who share his outlook.

A fixture involving Rangers, hibs and st mirren is a banker in the first round of games or 2.

They are supposed to be but there always seem to be some less than random outputs as well so I guess it will depend on the data put in and how it's calculated.

With the players and presumably a lot of Murray Park staff still on holiday and the short amount of time until the season starts, the pressure is going to be well and truly on for the new management team to whip a squad into shape in time no matter who we get drawn against in the first fixture.

Dumbarton away would be a shocking introduction to Scottish football for Mark Warburton.

 

He'd walk out and look at that pitch and just go....
