Double signing for Rangers as James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn agree transfers from Wigan Athletic

07:22, 19 July 2015 By Scott McDermott

FULL-BACK Tavernier and former England U-21 striker Waghorn have agreed deals at Ibrox last night.

RANGERS last night struck a deal to sign Wigan pair James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn.

It comes just hours after Ibrox gaffer Mark Warburton captured midfielder Andy Halliday. It’s understood that Rangers have now agreed a deal with Latics owner Dave Whelan for full-back Tavernier and ex-England U-21 striker Waghorn.

MailSport understands the Gers gaffer could also tie up a deal for out-of-contract former Hearts star Jason Holt in the next 48 hours.

The playmaker, who will cost Gers a development fee, has impressed in training at Murray Park.

Warburton also remains on the trail of Hibs ace Scott Allan, who scored in the Hibees’ 2-1 friendly win over Dunfermline yesterday.

Halliday was unveiled yesterday and insists he never gave up hope of pulling on a Rangers top – even after the club rejected him as a kid.

The 23-year-old was released in 2007 but fought to kickstart his career at Livingston, Middlesbrough and Bradford City.

He said: “At the time, being released from Rangers was the worst thing that happened in my career.

“But I always knew, deep down, there would be a chance I could come back.

“I lived on Copland Road when I was young so Ibrox was near enough in my back garden.

“I’m just happy that it’s happened. I don’t think I would ever have given up.

“It feels as if a fan has got the chance to play for Gers. So it’ll maybe not sink in until I walk out in front of 50,000 fans at Ibrox.”

Young Scot Ally Reynolds dreams of securing transfer to Rangers as he chases footballing career in Cyprus.

REYNOLDS, 18, left Scotland nine years ago when his dad took a job at a British military base in Cyprus - and now he's made his debut for local club Apollon Limassol.

EXILED Scot Ally Reynolds only made his senior debut for Apollon Limassol two weeks ago but the teenager is now already dreaming of turning out for Rangers.

The 18-year-old midfielder is unknown in Scotland but he’s hoping to become a household name one

day – like the Light Blues legend he’s named after.

Reynolds left his native Edinburgh nine years ago when his father David took a job at the British military base at Episkopi in Cyprus.

He soon joined local team Apollon and after starting out in their Under-10s he made his first team debut two weeks ago in Moldova.

And having already enjoyed a taste of European football, he hopes to establish himself at the top end of the game, either at home or abroad.

Reynolds said: “I grew up in the Loanhead area of Edinburgh but the family relocated to Cyprus when I was nine after my dad got a job here.

“I was already involved in football before I left Scotland.

“I was in the Hibs Academy and they had contacts at Apollon Limassol so I was able to make the switch from one youth system to the other quite easily.

“I’ve been with Apollon ever since, working my way up through the age groups, so making my debut away to FC Saxan at the start of the month was one of the proudest moments of my life.

“I’d been working really hard in training beforehand and deserved my chance. I wasn’t nervous before it – just excited at making my professional debut.

“I felt I played really well and our coach Pedro Emanuel told me how pleased he was with my overall performance and that meant a lot.”

Apollon won the tie after 2-0 victories home and away over the Moldovan side, and are halfway through a second qualifier against FK Trakai of Lithuania with the Cypriot side already 4-0 up. Reynolds is desperate for more game time in Europe, given the Cypriot League season doesn’t start until the end of August.

But he knows he’s in good hands under a manager who has worked with the very best and won the game’s biggest prizes with Porto.

He added: “We are lucky to have someone with the pedigree of Pedro Emanuel in charge as there’s so much you can learn from him.

“He is great with the players. He’s a legend and I love the style he’s got us playing. He played in defence under Jose Mourinho in the Porto team that won the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League the following year.

“It doesn’t get much better than that and he was the No.2 under Andre Villas-Boas at Porto after he had to retire from playing. I know he played in the team that beat Celtic in the UEFA Cup Final. I’m too young to remember watching the game but as a Rangers fan, that means something to me.”

Ally was named after Gers icon Ally McCoist and he dreams of emulating the achievements of his hero.

He said: “My dad was always a big Rangers fan and named me after McCoist. I’ve always loved the club as well and I hope that at one point in my career I can get to play for them. That would be the ultimate for me.

“For now, I want to establish myself as a regular at Apollon and get games under my belt.

“I play in central midfield and have a patient approach geared towards build-up play. I’m told I have a Spanish style of play, even though I’m 6ft 1in tall.

“I’m living the dream right now and want to use my Europa League experience as a launchpad for my career.”

I wonder how this became a story. An unknown Player in Cyprus all of a sudden in the Scottish papers. I guess the journalist was either a family member or friend or was having a holiday in Cyprus.

Don Cowie: Rangers have got gems in James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn

THE duo are expected to sign on at Ibrox in the coming days and their Wigan teammate Cowie insists they will be great signings for Rangers.

DON COWIE reckons Rangers supporters will soon warm to Wigan pair James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn once Mark Warburton gets the polish out.

The duo are due to check in at Ibrox today after a fee of around £400,000 was agreed and they will join up with former Latics team-mate Rob Kiernan.

Gers fans might not be doing cartwheels at players coming from a club in England’s third tier but Wigan midfielder Cowie is convinced all three are gems who just need a change of scenery to shine.

The ex-Inverness, Watford and Cardiff star said: “I wouldn’t look at it as a
negative that they are leaving Wigan. It’s a case of us being relegated and our new manager, Gary Caldwell, wanting to put his own stamp on things.

“He also has to balance the books. We have a big squad and you can only carry a certain number. Getting some money in for those two lets him shuffle the pack a bit.

“But it’s no reflection of them as players. He would have liked to have kept them as they are talented young guys. But he also has to look at what he needs for this league so it is a good deal for all parties.

“It can only be good for the guys. It will get them playing again at Rangers and I can only see them doing well. They will be great signings.”

Tavernier is just 23 having come through at Leeds and Newcastle and spent much of his career on loan.

Waghorn, 25, was a hit at Leicester under Sven Goran Eriksson and was capped by England Under-21s but toiled as the Latics went down last term.

Cowie feels a fresh start will invigorate the pair at Rangers.

He said: “They both have good pedigree. Trav has been part of promotion-winning sides in the last two years. He helped Rotherham get up then did it again at Bristol City last year. He came through the ranks with Newcastle and is a very good young player.

“Waggy is the same. He was at
Sunderland and Leicester before joining Wigan. He’s a bit older but it was hard for everyone here last season. We were all gutted with relegation.

“He is a player who’ll reward you with goals if he gets a run of games. I’ve played against him and he is a real handful. He has great movement and
is dangerous in and around
the box.

“He broke into the Foxes team under Sven, who obviously rated him and it was no surprise Wigan came in for him then.

“Rangers have got big Rob as well so they will have a bit of company. He is a great signing. He’s a top player and the right age. I’ve got no doubt they are three quality signings.”

Cowie revealed he was quick to give the new boys the lowdown on their new club – but he admits they will still be in for a shock.

He said: “When I heard there was interest from Rangers I spoke to them. They’ll soon see how big a club they are signing for. They’ll see it for themselves in this week’s friendly with Burnley.

“They will soon know what they have got into and, all going well, this time next year they will be preparing for the Premiership.

“Most people down here know Rangers are still a huge club even though they are not in the top flight at the moment.”

Cowie is sure the trio will do well
in Scotland – because Rangers have a top man at the helm.

The midfielder was at Watford when Warburton was starting out as a youth boss and he could see the coach was on the way up.

He added: “I met Mark at Watford and you could see he had something about him. There was a conveyor belt of young players through coming through and a lot of that was down to him.

“He wanted to become a boss in his own right and the job he did at Brentford was incredible. Everyone down here was shocked with the news he was being let go. Most would say it’s Brentford’s loss and Rangers’ gain.”

Cowie is sticking around to help new gaffer Caldwell’s rebuilding at Wigan.

He said: “I hope we have a good season and get back up to the Championship.”
