Rangers will be getting a big game player if they sign Andy Halliday.. he's exactly what they need, says Bradford boss

PHIL PARKINSON last night told Rangers fans they’ll be getting a man for the big occasion if Andy Halliday signs a deal with the Ibrox club.

Bradford boss Parkinson is in Scotland with his team for two pre-season games, Tuesday’s

3-0 win over Motherwell and Saturday’s trip to St Mirren.

Having been in charge of the Bantams for four years now, he has enjoyed some notable highs including a League Cup Final appearance in 2013.

But arguably his finest moment came last season as unfancied City won 4-2 at Chelsea in the FA Cup – with former Livingston kid Halliday one of the scorers.

The 23-year-old grabbed his side’s crucial third goal at Stamford Bridge to put them ahead for the first time and give them a lead they would hang on to.

Halliday signed a short-term deal with Bradford in January after initially going there on loan from Middlesbrough in October.

The utility player left again in the summer to pursue a move to a bigger club and has been offered terms at Ibrox – and his old boss reckons turning out for Gers will suit him to a tee.

Halliday featured in Gers' 2-0 friendly win over Ayr yesterday - and fellow trialist Jason Holt scored this cracker.

All the latest news from Ibrox

Parkinson said: “Andy did really well for us against Chelsea and in our other big games he was outstanding. You won’t get a better example of what he can do than the game at Stamford Bridge and he’ll be a good signing for Rangers if it goes through.

“The biggest thing he has is his versatility. He can play in a number of positions, from the centre of midfield to both wide areas and left-back as well.

“Having players like that in your squad is important and he has the athleticism to cope against players from a higher level. As you go up the divisions in England, the players are more powerful and athletic and Andy has the attributes to deal with that.

“From reading Mark Warburton’s comments when he took over, he wants more running power and younger legs in his team. Andy would be a good acquisition in that respect. He is very capable physically and shows up well in the big matches.”

Meanwhile, Jordan Thompson has spoken of his dream of playing at Ibrox after signing a two-year deal. The 18-year-old central midfielder from Northern Ireland, a life-long Gers fan, was initially acquired as an academy signing but immediately impressed Warburton.

Thompson, who was released by Manchester United this summer after four years in the youth set-up, has been training with the first team and travelled to London to play in their game with Spurs on Friday.

He said: “It’s been brilliant so far. To run out at Ibrox would be a dream come true being a Rangers fan – it would leave me speechless.”

I'll be honest and admit to having no idea of all these players we've signed recently, absolutely no knowledge at all.

But that in no way makes me feel uninspired by the developments, in fact it's having the complete opposite effect on me and I just can't wait to see how all this vision from W&W transpires in the coming season.

Buckle up, settle down, a return to the good old days is how I'm feeling about it.

Thursday 16 July 2015

RANGERS boss Mark Warburton is set to make Andy Halliday his sixth summer signing after the winger underwent a medical.

Halliday, who is a free agent after being released by Bradford City in the summer, has been training at Murray Park during pre-season.

And Warburton has been impressed with the former Livingston and Middlesbrough player in his side's friendly matches so far.

The 23-year-old, a former Gers youth player, is poised to put pen to paper on a three year contract with the Ladbrokes Championship club.

He will be the Light Blues gaffer's sixth capture since being appointed Ibrox boss last month.

Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan, Wes Foderingham, Jordan Thompson and Tom Lang have all joined the Glasgow giants since the former Brentford boss took over. .

Glasgow-born Halliday got his professional career underway at Livingston before moving on to Middlesbrough in 2010.

He was loaned out to Walsall, Blackpool and Bradford during his time at the Riverside and moved to Bradford in January.

He scored the fourth goal for the Bantams in their historic 4-2 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fourth round last season.

Despite his involvement in that success, the midfielder exited Valley Parade this summer.
