The SPFL has today announced the betting company Ladbrokes as its title sponsor from season 2015/16, in a two-year deal which includes rights across all four leagues and 42 clubs.

The deal is the biggest ever of its kind in Scottish football and will see the nation’s professional football leagues become known as the Ladbrokes Premiership, Ladbrokes Championship, Ladbrokes League 1 and Ladbrokes League 2 ahead of the start of the new season in August.

It marks the latest in a rich history of high-profile sports sponsorship and brand associations for Ladbrokes, which plans to run a host of activations through the different rights of its SPFL title partnership.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ladbrokes to the SPFL’s growing family of key sponsors and partners and look forward to working with them from season 2015/16 at this truly exciting time for Scottish football.

“As an established and respected leading brand in its very competitive marketplace, Ladbrokes is a perfect partner for the SPFL and we have a shared vision of a positive future for professional league football in Scotland. Ladbrokes’ backing of Scottish football is hugely valued and appreciated and I say that not only on behalf of the SPFL but also for all 42 member clubs.

“Today’s announcement is the result of significant investment of energy and effort and further strengthens our optimism about the future health of the game in Scotland.

“With all that positivity comes an opportunity to tell the story of a modern, engaging and exciting Scottish football environment and we look forward to doing just that with all our partners including new title sponsor Ladbrokes.”

Ladbrokes is a world leader in the betting and gaming industry with more than 2,100 shops and a great heritage and presence across UK sport. It has recently sponsored Rugby Football League’s Challenge Cup, extended its backing of horse racing’s St Leger Festival at Doncaster and continues to sponsor The Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Welcoming the new partnership, Jim Mullen, CEO of Ladbrokes said: “We love football so we are delighted to be working with the SPFL on one of the best opportunities in British sport.

“This partnership will help to propel Ladbrokes and the SPFL to new heights and will put us at the heart of Scottish football throughout the year. Getting people engaged with great sport and making sure they share our passion is at the very core of everything we are about.

“Our customers support clubs at every level of Scottish football from the professional leagues that we sponsor to the local Sunday League stalwarts. The Scottish game deserves a committed supporter and our financial backing will help to ensure every level of the game benefits from Ladbrokes' involvement."

Desmond cashes in as Ladbrokes buys bookies

FINANCIER Dermot Desmond has come up trumps with Ladbrokes for the second time this year. The British gambling firm has paid €6m to buy Dublin-based Chronicle Bookmakers, in which he has a stake.

Ladbrokes revealed in its interim results that it has bought Chronicle, a leading on-course book maker.

The deal comes just months after Ladbrokes agreed to pay up to €43m to buy Mr Desmond's Betdaq betting exchange.

Chronicle is owned by Justin Carthy and Mr Desmond. The company and Mr Desmond also teamed up in 2005 to launch the Sporting Emporium casino in Dublin.

Apart from its on-course betting presence, Chronicle operated a website, BetChronicle, which was closed last October.

Mr Desmond was already a sizeable shareholder in Ladbrokes prior to the sale of Betdaq, with a 2pc stake.

But the Betdaq purchase was settled using €15m in cash and €18.6m in Ladbrokes' shares, further boosting Mr Desmond's stake in the betting group.

An additional €9.2m payment by Ladbrokes for Betdaq is contingent on certain performance metrics being achieved by the business over a four-year period.

Ladbrokes also agreed to pay an additional €4m to buy a 10pc stake in a subsidiary of Betdaq's immediate parent, TBH.

Ladbrokes has a call option to acquire the remainder of the subsidiary after four years.

It said the Betdaq business had contributed £3.9m (€4.5m) in revenue and posted a net loss of £300,000 (€348,000) since it was acquired at the end of February.

Releasing its interim results for the six months to the end of June, Ladbrokes said that its operating profit on the island of Ireland fell 6pc to £6.3m (€7.3m) in the period, even as net revenue rose 2pc to £41.3m (€48m). Ladbrokes has 213 shops across Ireland, with 79 of them in Northern Ireland.

Clydesdale Bank to sponsor SPL

Thursday 19th October 2006

Clydesdale Bank has been announced as the new sponsor of Scottish premier football in a deal worth up to £8 million.

At a meeting of the Scottish Premier League Clubs at Glasgow's Hampden Park Stadium today (19 October), Clydesdale Bank's proposal was unanimously approved by the 12 SPL Clubs.

Clydesdale Bank's sponsorship will commence in July 2007 and represents a total investment of some £8 million over four years in the SPL alone. Working in partnership with the SPL, Clydesdale Bank will make an additional investment to maximise the value of this sponsorship for staff, customers and the communities in which it operates.
