FIFTEEN year old Rangers youngster Zak Rudden has been added to the Scotland under-17 squad who will compete at the European Championships this month.

The Gers striker joined up with the Scotland Under-17 squad on Saturday along with McCrorie brothers Ross and Robby and Liam Burt as they head to Bulgaria to compete Under-17 Championship Finals.

In joining up with the squad, Rudden has become the first Scottish FA Performance School player to be called up to a Scotland squad appearing at a major European Championship Finals.

The young striker replaced Dundee United’s Alistair Coote, who has withdrawn at the request of his club.

Rudden made history by becoming the first Performance School player to score for his country at National Youth Team level when he netted in an under-15 win over Switzerland last year.

The 15-year-old trains with the Performance School at Broughton High School five days a week as well as training and playing with Rangers at Murray Park.

Scott Gemmill's under-17s play their first match at this summer’s finals against France on Thursday, 7th May, kick-off 3pm (UK time).

Very best of luck to the lad. He and his family must be over the moon!

I've seen him mentioned quite regularly in Elfideldo's youth match reports as having been on the score sheet, so he's obviously got goals in him!

Here's another article for those who think our youth system is a mess.

When you look at the fact we have perhaps five players from the U-20 team who are almost good enough for the big team, and the fact that they have made the cup final that's good.

Ally that to the fact that there are three under 17's in the U-20's, and we have this U-15 being selected for the Scotland U-17 squad - you have to ask yourself if our youth setup is really that bad.

Maybe if Kingco invest some decent money in the first team over the summer, and with these youths coming through we may not be that far away from getting back to No. 1 after all.

There are also some younger ones who have made the international squad in the older age groups too. There is a U13 selected for U14 and who has been watched by Man Utd and a few other Premiership teams
