JohnMc 2,754
I don't recall anyone in League 1 showing interest in him. I don't recall any team at all ever being interested in him. He wouldn't have got anything like the same money elsewhere. With respect how would you know who was or wasn't interested in taking McCulloch as a free agent three years ago. With no transfer fee a player could expect a signing-on fee in excess of £600,000 on top of his salary, the average salary in League 1 is nearly £4,000 a week.
Zappa 0
That's possible certainly. But it's worth remembering that Wallace has had a wretched season until about three weeks ago, none of the other centre-backs have looked good, Foster was getting booed by our support before his injury, Black has been poor in the holding midfield role, Law only started playing a fortnight ago and neither Simonson or Robinson inspired confidence in anyone. McCulloch is not the long term answer to any question however he's only one player in a side that has defended badly as a team, he's not been anymore culpable than most of the others. If the midfield aren't retaining the ball or winning it, if the full backs aren't stopping crosses and if the keepers aren't commanding their box then even the best centre-half is going to get exposed. Those are all fair points mate, but none of it changes the fact that Jig isn't even centre-half or the fact that despite being asked to play in that position for a couple of seasons now he still has incredibly poor positional sense and gets caught out of position at critical moments on quite a regular basis. An interesting thing happened on Sunday when McCulloch was sent off. McCall chose to take off a midfielder when a lot of people would have expected him to take off Miller or Clark and play one up. McCall realised that our forwards were not allowing the Hearts defence the time to build from the back, in short our defending started the second they took possession. When the side defends as a team even the slowest centre-half looks less exposed. Fair points again, but the important thing about that substitution was that by taking off Vuckic McCall was sacrificing an attacking midfielder, not a controlling or defensive midfielder. Obviously it could be argued that Shiels and Law are attacking midfielders too, but they were both playing very well and working extremely hard, so I think Vuckic was the obvious choice and it's a decision which paid off.

And how do you know anyone in league 1 would look twice at an almost 33 year old who was hardly setting Scottish football alight? £600k? Absolutely no chance. £4k a week? What?

In fairness, it was at the end of October 2012 when he signed his 2 year contract extension, so with him being contacted until the summer of 2013 at that time it was probably a bit early for Clubs to be speaking to him.

Here is a link to some data leading up to a couple of years before Rangers went into administration. http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2011/10/30/english-football-wages-since-1984-85-301001/ Not sure what has happened to weekly wages since then.

If that is true Craig then it is indeed crazy as there is no way he would be getting anything like that at Feynoord. If Man City are going to give such huge pay hikes to players who have not proven themselves what are they paying their star players. I blame Sky TV for making football so crazy, I really hope they go bust.

der Berliner 3,747
Speaking of wages, and slightly off topic.... apparently Guidetti is on 93k a week at City.... the game really has gone absolutely mental !! Found that to be a little steep and have no idea whether the number below is right either: The on-loan Manchester City ace was yesterday named SPFL Player of the Month for October after emerging as a star turn for the Hoops, with five goals in four games sparking frenzied speculation over his long-term future. Boss Ronny Deila last week said if Guidetti – whose wages at City are around £40,000 a week – were to sign on at Parkhead, he would need to fit into the club’s tight pay structure. Express Still utter madness, but you do not expect anything less when it comes to money and the EPL.
