John Greig To Return To Ibrox

Rangers legend John Greig set for Ibrox return

DAVE KING will stand shoulder to shoulder with John Greig at Ibrox on Tuesday night to symbolically signal the revival of Rangers under his stewardship.

As far as the South African tycoon is concerned, no one represents the traditions and values of the club better than the man voted the Greatest Ever Ranger by the supporters.

The game with Queen of the South will be another defining moment for the new regime, who swept into power on Friday by an overwhelming majority.

King, who was at Central Park yesterday as the Gers turned in a poor performance on the park to draw 0-0 with Cowdenbeath, said: “There is no better living individual who represents what we’re trying to do – take the club forward by going back to the value system.

“And I can’t think of anyone who, standing with us in the directors’ box on Tuesday night, will represent what we’re trying to achieve more than John Greig.”

Few have been more disheartened by the corporate carnage at Rangers over the past four years than the 72-year-old, who won three Trebles and led the Light Blues to Cup-Winners’ Cup glory over Dynamo Moscow in 1972.

Greig has only been back at Ibrox twice since resigning from the board in October 2011 along with John McClelland, when the pair found themselves marginalised by Craig Whyte.

He was a special guest at the 140-year celebration game in 2012, then returned for the opening game of this season against Hearts when the Govan Stand was renamed in honour of his friend Sandy Jardine.

Paul Murray and John Gilligan were also at Central Park yesterday as the new era began in earnest. They hope to announce more key executive appointments in the coming days and will continue their search for a new manager to replace caretaker Kenny McDowall.
