Celtic hit with €10,000 UEFA fine for Zagreb crowd disturbances

Celtic have been fined €10,000 (£7,330) by UEFA following crowd disturbances at their Europa League match with Dinamo Zagreb last year.

 

European football's governing body held disciplinary proceedings against the Scottish champions last Thursday following allegations of "inappropriate behaviour" by travelling fans at the game in Croatia in December.

 

The punishment marks the sixth time in just over three years UEFA have taken action against Celtic.

 

There had been fears the sanction could have been more severe due to the governing body's policy on recidivism.

 

UEFA's policy is such that if disciplinary measures have to be imposed for offences of a similar nature within a five-year period, that is seen as an aggravating circumstance and increases the likelihood of a great punishment.

 

A club spokesperson said: “Clearly everyone is extremely disappointed that the behaviour of only a handful of people and in particular the use of flares, have led to a further fine from UEFA.

 

“We have repeatedly called for the use of flares to stop. We cannot and will not allow the safety of our supporters or the reputation of our great club to be compromised by the actions of a tiny minority.

 

“It is time those responsible understand the damage this does to the club they claim to support.”

 

Celtic assistant boss John Collins, speaking as his team travelled to Italy for their UEFA Europa League last 32 second leg clash with Inter Milan, said the fine was "disappointing".

 

He added that the club must "weed out the one or two" who cause trouble.

 

Previous incidents

 

An "illicit banner" displayed at a UEFA Champions League qualifier with KR Reykjavik in 2014 drew a £16,000 fine from the governing body.

 

The club were also handed a £42,000 fine in 2013 for another "illicit banner" at a Champions League match with AC Milan in 2013.

 

At the time, Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell condemned the "small minority" of supporters who were "damaging the reputation" of the club.

 

Earlier in 2013, the setting off of fireworks at a Champions League qualifier with Cliftonville also resulted in a fine of just over £4,000.

 

The club's fans also caused them to be fined twice during their Europa League campaign in the 2011/12 season.

 

In March 2012, UEFA fined Celtic £21,000 after supporters displayed an offensive banner and set off flares during an away game with Udinese.

 

Celtic were also fined £13,000 for "illicit chanting" in the same competition during a match with Rennes in 2011.

Celtic fined by Uefa for Europa League fan disturbance

 

Celtic have been fined £7,300 by Uefa following crowd disturbances during their Europa League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb.

 

It is the fifth time in three years Celtic have been charged by Uefa over supporter behaviour.

 

Fans clashed with police after fireworks were set off in the Celtic end of Stadion Maksimir as the Scottish champions lost 4-3 in Croatia.

 

Despite that December defeat, Celtic qualified for the last 32.

 

The fine - imposed by Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body - was announced as Celtic and their fans travelled to Italy for the Thursday's second leg against Inter Milan.

Reacting to the news, Celtic assistant manager John Collins stressed that it is "vitally important" that travelling supporters match what he suggested was the good behaviour displayed by home fans during the 3-3 first-leg draw in Glasgow.

 

"We are obviously disappointed," he said. "We had 60,000 last week and it was unbelievable behaviour from every one of them, the atmosphere, and that is what Celtic is all about.

 

"One or two are causing problems and hopefully that is the last we hear of it.

 

"They are representing a wonderful football club and throughout the years the vast majority of them have been impeccably behaved and we have a great reputation throughout Europe.

 

"One or two we have to try to weed out."
