Mark Wotte claims the SFA haven’t done enough to stop Rangers going into financial freefall.

The outspoken former performance director accused his old employers of standing back and letting the Ibrox debacle spin out of control.

Craig Whyte led the club into liquidation in 2012 before it blew millions under Charles Green. Now heavily in debt, Gers are being bankrolled by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.

Dutchman Wotte said: “I don’t think Scottish football can accept structural financial mismanagement.

“The SFA should have more responsibility for checking mismanagement like UEFA does with big clubs in Europe.

“Some governing bodies in Europe work with such an audit responsibility and clubs in debt are put in categories that restrict them when it comes to spending as if they have a tree with money in the back garden. Eventually it is best for all to have financially viable professional clubs in Scotland.”

Wotte feels a major opportunity was missed in 2013 when Scottish league reconstruction did not bring about an expanded top flight.

He said: “The Premiership should go up to 16 teams, with additional play-offs to qualify for Europe.

“This season shows the SPFL would have been more exciting, more challenging, more competitive and thus more attractive if Hearts, Rangers, Hibs and Falkirk had been involved, for example.

“It is a very slow process to get things agreed upon, with so many clubs in financial trouble.”

Wotte fears our game won’t progress unless coaches prioritise player development.

He said: “If it continues to be all about team coaching and winning at certain clubs, Scottish football will stagnate or even go backwards again.”

I have it from a good source that Marks brother has a big soft spot for Rangers, He is the agent who organises a lot of our pre-season trips to Holland and Germany.

Just out of interest, how much are we in "heavy debts" these days? And if so, compared to whom and what?

Debt is relative. We haven't had high debts since admin but they have still been crippling. You would struggle to find a club as financially mismanaged as ours since the Murray era.

The only thing stopping this board running up huge debts is nobody is stupid enough to lend them much money.

We are still heavily in debt though. Borrowing money to pay off pre-existing debts regularly.

Maybe I am mistaken, but what is crippling (and dangerous) right now is that we need "cash" to pay wages and running costs, hence the various "loans". Methinks debts - and how much you can "safely" have - is balanced against turnover. This season, the turnover is rather bad, for obvious reasons. I would reckon that once King and Co. take over and issue a rallying cry, not only would the loans (essentially debts) to Ashley be gone, but also due to increased ST sales and share issue much of our immediate problems money-wise be solved. likewise, you would hope that something can be done about the merch deal. Not that we still need investement on and off the pitch, hence the first year(s) might not be rosy, but "gloom" looks different to me.
