Welcome Paul Le Guen

Recommended Posts

Even if we only have £5million to spend, that still leaves £4.8m to spend plus any money we bring in from players leaving.

Not that I'm fussy about big names anyway. I'd rather see any money spent on guys like Svensson, Clement and Elmander than over-rated, over-priced egomaniacs...

That's not to say a big name player wouldn't be welcome depending on who it actually is.

I hope I speak for all my fellow bears by alluding to my approval of the players we've brought in so far, and those we're apparently working on getting like Clement and Elmander.

But I think it would be a nice lump of icing on top of the cake if we were somehow to bring in one really tasty signing, a true A-lister just to really set the cat among the pigeons.

I'm not being greedy, I really am quite happy with progress thus far, but one big name who will enhance the team would really be the cherry on top and get our collective imaginations pumping.

I agree to an extent mate.

But I remember Murray and Advocaat doing something similar in 1999 or thereabouts by signing Kanchelskis because thet felt the fans were a bit unhappy with the unknowns like Gio and Amato...

That was essentially £5.5million fee wasted as well as £35K p/week wages for 3 years.

We can't afford to do that now just because the fans haven't heard of the new guys.

Just to add to Frankie's comments - PLG doesn't seem like the type of guy that necessarily needs or wants to buy a "big name" - I see him in the mould of Arsene Wenger who also seems to be very happy to unearth diamonds in the rough.

I don't think we need the big names to win back the SPL - we need a squad that is hungry to play and win and a manager that is tactically astute. I still believe our squad should have won the SPL last year but their lack of interest and lack of tactical leadership meant we didn't.

Everyone would love a big name to come in though as you associate with big names - but look at the jb Gio did for us.... yet was an unknown when he arrived - and look at what Larsson did for THEM and he was a relative unknown as well - would take any of those 2 in their heydey (actually, would consider them both now.....)

Difference was Kanchelskis was a pensioner who'd been there and done that. He was a big name but living on reputation. I completely see your point though.

However, PLG seems to have a much better eye for a player, and seems to want to bring in fairly young talent. The only older player so far is Sionko, and going by his performance against Ghana I'm pretty happy with him.

I just think that because we've been a shadow of our 9IAR and early Advocaat era selves in recent years, and have allowed Celtic to dominate, that we want to emphasise our returning superiority and exercise it in a way which will give the tims some real fear.

Right now they're more curious about what's going on at Ibrox than anything else, and they see a rebuilding job but nothing yet to be truly frightened of (Their delusion, granted). I just think a glamorous name in his mid 20s with known pedigree would be a great coup and give them something to be jealous of and us something to be really excited about.

We have an A-List manager. I just think we need one new A-List player to go with him.

In the long term I agree, we must scale up our playing staff.

But PLG is here for 3 years so we should be patient and let him do his job. Too many fans are expecting miracles and overnight success. PLG is the right man for the job and I feel he will return us to the glory days, but it might take a year or 2 before we really feel the effects of the changes he is making.

Wenger has spent millions on superstars like Hleb and Vieira, not to mention Henry. He might be able to develop youngsters too, but lest we forget he's bought plenty of A-Listers to Arsenal.

I think PLG could coach ICT to the SPL - that's how good a manager he is! Even with last year's Rangers squad PLG could wipe the floor with the SPL, he really could. But with his own players he should run absolute riot.

Bear in mind he did cost about £6M from Feyenoord. His sheer cost told us he was a quality player.

I accept you don't need superstars to achieve things, but it is just a nice present for the supporters who suffered so much if they have a hollywood star style player, a real heavyweight to get excited about. It doesn't have to be a superstar, or whatever, but just someone to get the juices flowing in the way PLG himself has.

Advocaat managed to turn us round in a single year (With a greater budget I admit) - I honestly do not see any reason why PLG (Who is a better manager imo) can't do the same. We've brought in some real quality, shipped out some players, and are restructuring from the ground up.

I don't expect miracles, but PLG is more than capable of delivering them.

That's how highly I rate this guy.

I never said Wenger doesn't bring A-listers as well but he also unearths some quality players who are relative unknowns.

Agreed (if he was given time), and hence why I don't think we NEED big name players.

Yes he was/is quality but was still relatively unknown at the time.

I don't disagree Danny - I would love to have a big name player too - and I WANT to see at least 1 such player at Ibrox this pre-season - but I won't lose sleep if we don't. I think even with the squad we have and better coaching at the helm that we could win the SPL - but will still be nice to see more players coming through the doors.

I rate him no less than you mate but hype can be dangerous.

We need to keep calm and stay patient. Regaining the SPL should be achieveable but if success doesn't happen right away I can accept that as long as various improvements are obvious.
