craig 5,199
Very few businesses don't spend money they don't have Exactly - and in the business world it is, strangely enough, seen as being inefficient if companies don't have any debt at all - because the cost of debt often is less than the return on investment.
Super Cooper 0
That debt could have been zero with the sale of just two or 3 of his players. Davis, Naismith and McGregor would have seen that debt at around 5 million. Wouldn't have been difficult to achieve. Which 2 or 3 players would have gave us £18m? Negotiating transfers has never been our forte. God there was talk of Davis leaving a year or so before for only £3m. McGregor valued at £4m. Our best player in years left the club for around £4m with only £1.5m up front. You take Davis, Naismith and McGregor out of our team and we don't win cups or titles. That is 3 top players crucial to our club. I don't believe there is any defence whatsoever of our state then. It was a shambles. Administration was on the cards for a while, running at a huge loss was the norm and meltdown was only a year or two away if we had no European football. Whyte took over a club who was running at a £10m loss right away, before a ball was kicked. A £30m + wage bill.........it was simply unsustainable. He then had the cheek to offer a couple of huge contracts and spend nearly £5m. That was only ever going to end up one way. European elimination should have seen immediate downsizing. Instead that b@stard increased our operating costs. Rangers had been crying out for a clued up on football owner. Someone who could have us living within our means and hire and fire intelligently. As Walter said many times, when he needed a player he phoned the chairman,. He then phoned the bank and a deal was done. No working harder, doing better, expecting more, just we will spend and sign our way out of whatever mess were in. That to me is just wrong.
Ser Barristan Selmy 222
Yet funnily enough it was that same manager that gave us some of the most enjoyable nights we have ever witnessed. Only one other manager got us to a European final. He also gave us 3-in-a-row despite being given little money to spend in his 2nd stint. Yes, there were failures, but he also had his share of successes - but for the 3-in-a-row we would probably have went under before we eventually did. Sometimes people just want to see the worst in everyone else. Such a shame, given the years that Walter gave the Club. He had 2 good seasons in Europe. He spent a fortune and was a failure there. He was successful in Scotland but it's hard not to be with the money he had. The football he played was terrible.
Ser Barristan Selmy 222
Very few businesses don't spend money they don't have Most businesses are not run as terribly as we are. This has been the case for as far back as I can remember. Edited November 21, 2014 by Ser Barristan Selmy

There are people who only have half-empty glasses. And then there are the likes of you who apparently only have either empty glasses, or none at all.

quattro 0
Dave King spoke of administration over four years ago, hardly an endorsement of the clubs financial policies. http://ow.ly/EFDFH
BEARGER 1,830
One "good" thing to come out of the mess we have had for the last few years must be the realisation by the fans that so called legends like Walter & Ally live in a different world from the rest of us. The words attributed to Walter show how far out of touch with reality he is. Not one bad word about Murray, complete backing for Ally even looking for more money to be spent on players.
Hildy 0
I would hate to see Smith back at Rangers in an influential position. Ally would be secure indefinitely and the football would continue to provide people with a reason to do something else on a Saturday afternoon. This would be the downside of Dave King gaining control. Quite frankly, Rangers needs to leave the likes of Walter Smith and Graeme Souness in the past and embrace more enlightened methods, and with brand new personnel.

I just wish people would separate the man from the legend i.e player or manager. A legend in one capacity doesn't give them carte blanche to be taken seriously on anything else.
