I think Andy is meaning that it would be harder to pursue the club - politically - if there was fan control.

The entity would be the same but a substantive change in its ownership could see a more benign attitude from HMRC. HMRC might have to be persuaded to back off, but they would be more likely to do so if they were about to bankrupt a club that a hundred thousand people had jointly invested in.

You may be right and it would be nice to think you were - but I'm afraid I don't think HMRC would take that into consideration.

HMRC is a very long way from Scotland and they don't give a tuppeny toss who they annoy up here.

I have just looked out some "old correspondence" that may be pertinent to today's news.

When Gary Withey parted company with Collyer Bristow, he moved to a company called Segens. At the time, I felt it my moral duty to inform his new employer just exactly what they were taking on. This is the reply I received on April 12th 2012.

Dear govan_derriere,

Thank you for your e mail. I am not sure why it is that you consider that your status as a shareholder of Rangers football club has anything to do with this practice.

Mr Withey is doing some consultancy work for us - entirely unconnected with Rangers or Mr Whyte.

We have no other connection with that matter and there is no proper allegation or evidence that Mr Withey has benefited in any way from those matters or acted in any way which has given rise to disciplinary proceedings against him.

I appreciate that press coverage may make certain insinuations but so far as I am aware, there have been no findings of any wrongdoing by Mr Withey.

It may be that the administrators are better able to assist you in your enquiries since I understand that their practice was acting as advisors to the club on the sale to Mr Whyte in the first place. I have no personal knowledge or involvement in the matter however.

Yours sincerely

If true, then the detention of Clark & Whitehouse could certainly point to the investigations being about far more than just Whyte's takeover, if not now, then certainly as the situation develops.

As ever though, criminal activities need to be proven and most of these men will try to lie and wriggle their way out of it via technicalities.

Welcome though today's news may be it still does not answer how Whyte managed to acquire Rangers so easily despite the warnings from the likes of AJ & PM who clearly knew all about his past and said so at the time.

I've always had my doubts about SDM willingly selling to Whyte(did LBG or Muir force the sale?) and why did HMRC not prevent it given Whyte already had tax arrears with them then almost inexplicably they then proceded to allow him to run up even more arrears by withholding PAYE & NI contributions at Rangers.

Not to mention the non-action by our SFA in stopping Whyte taking over Rangers at the time and subsequently they allowed Rangers to be thrown out the top division and withholding prize monies amongst other punishments after Whyte's ownership went disastrously wrong leading to administration/liquidation of oldco. Did they never consider Rangers might have been the victim rather than appearing desperate to hand out whatever punishments they could as often as they could.FWIW I believe Regan's position has been untenable at the SFA for some time now because of this

It remains to be seen now if there are to be further arrests. Only time will tell

Sounds as though he might have a little more than "no Knowledge"

Well played GD

"In a further development, the Telegraph understands that while Wallace and Nash were still in their posts, documents related to the 2012 share issue were passed to the Serious Fraud Office for investigation. The SFO had no comment to make last night."

An arrest warrant has been issued for former Rangers owner Craig Whyte following an investigation into the club's sale in 2011, it is understood.

The development came after four men were detained in England.

David Grier, Paul Clark and David Whitehouse worked for Duff and Phelps, who were Rangers' administrators.

Gary Withey worked for law firm Collier Bristow, which represented Craig Whyte before he bought Rangers from Sir David Murray for £1 in 2011.

The four men were held during early morning raids at addresses across the UK in an operation that involved officers from Police Scotland, Surrey Police, Cheshire Police and Thames Valley Police.

Police Scotland have been investigating the sale of Rangers from Sir David Murray to Craig Whyte for more than a year.

'Ongoing investigation'

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Four men have been detained as a result of the ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent acquisition of Rangers Football Club.

"Around 6am on Friday, Police Scotland officers, assisted by officers from Thames Valley Police, Cheshire Police and Surrey Police, attended a number of addresses in England and detained four men."

Duff and Phelps spokesman Marty Dauer said the firm was aware that three employees in the UK had been "detained for questioning in connection with work performed for Rangers Football Club".

He said this work "was commenced while these employees were part of MCR Partners, prior to its acquisition by Duff & Phelps in October of 2011".

He added: "Duff & Phelps has performed an internal investigation and commissioned an independent investigation of the related matters.

"As a result, we believe that our work for Rangers was conscientious, thorough and properly performed in every respect.

"Duff and Phelps has actively co-operated with all relevant investigating authorities throughout this process."

No wrongdoing

Mr Dauer said a subsequent review by the Insolvency Practitioners Association in 2013 had "cleared the firm of any wrongdoing or conflict of interest" over its involvement with Rangers.

That makes perfect sense because IIRC David Grier was pictured with Craig Whyte at Ibrox before he took over from SDM.
