craig 5,199 Posted September 1, 2014 Share Posted September 1, 2014 Today there are stories suggesting the the club is fourteen days from going under and yesterday the manager of Rangers told a press conference that he would only speak about football matters - and Rangers fans defend his action. I guess this sums up why we are where we are. Repeatedly there are calls from fans asking why there are no journalists properly investigating the club's meltdown, and yet the manager is defended for refusing to answer questions on this latest worrying development. If you attack journalists for asking questions that need to be asked, don't be aggrieved when they stop asking the questions that need to be asked. The same manager who has previously been lambasted for giving responses to financial matters because he doesn't know the clubs finances ? The clubs non-footballing matters should be answered by the CEO. That would be the norm for the vast majority of businesses. You wouldn't have the HR director publicly talk about a businesses finances, so why would you expect a football manager to do it ? craig 5,199 Posted September 1, 2014 Share Posted September 1, 2014 He's certainly not the ideal person to respond to this, and journalists should certainly be endeavouring to get answers from those who know more, but not to raise such a serious subject with the manager of Rangers would be unprofessional for any journalist who takes his profession seriously, and if Ally wants the respect of those journalists, he really must understand this. They were right to raise the subject and Ally was wrong to want to avoid it. They were right to ask the question but they asked the wrong person. McCoist was RIGHT to avoid it. It isn't his area of expertise. Funnily enough you suggested he should have answered it given his significant wage. Why isn't Wallace answering when a) he too is on a significant wage and b) it is actually his area of responsibility. It has often been said, and I believe it is probably true - we really are our own worst enemy. You are missing a very important point here. Rangers are a publicly traded entity. McCoist's response could have an effect on the share price. As it isn't his area of expertise he shouldn't be responding. He is the Manager of the Football Club, in other countries he would be referred to as the Head Coach. He is not the General Manager, far less the CEO of the plc. Obviously he knew and the journalists knew that the big story of the day was not Rangers v QoS but the big story of the day was not his story and he made it perfectly clear that he was there to comment solely on football matters. The journalists were out of order to pursue that line and after telling them several times he was perfectly correct to walk out. It would not surprise me in the least if he was under strict instructions not to comment on the share issue or any other aspect of Rangers financial affairs, as Craig rightly points out these are price sensitive issues, the more so when a share issue has just been launched. At the very least Rangers should have issued a press statement or made it clear that there would be no press statement by anyone from the Club since everything that needed to be said or could be said was in the Stock Exchange announcement. If it was anyone's job to field such questions it was Graham Wallace not Ally McCoist. What should have happened (if it was permissible within the SE Rules) was that Wallace should have been on hand to hold a preess conference immediately after Ally or at Ibrox later in the day. It's time that FOOTBALL journalists started asking McCoist football questions, here's a few to get them started: Why is McCulloch in the team? Why did you sign Lee Robinson when you have two youth international goalkeepers to back up the back up? Why is Mohsni still playing for Rangers? Why can't McKay get anywhere near the team? Why didn't we have one young player on the bench on Saturday? Why did you ask for the game v Esast Fife to be postponed when two of the international players that have been called up are not regular starters in the team and we have vastly superior resources to East Fife? etc etc and pursue these questions vigorously and not just accept vague answers like "footballing reasons" or "I'm not going to discuss individual players" etc etc. Then both the journalists and the football club manager would be doing their respective jobs in media terms. 0 Quote Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The major flaw in your post is that there was no Graham Wallace, office bearer or person from Rangers on hand to fill in the gap and thus it is the journalists job to ask AMcC on the situation, especially in that he has previously been prepared to talk on such matters when it suited. Who is short-changed out of the above is as usual, the supporter and shareholder. Give Wallace a nudge and remind him that his 'Communication & Engagement' initiatives are plastic and laughable.
