The drinking culture within Ibrox

The alleged drinking culture at Rangers is very worrying, if it is true. This is especially so if it involves younger players that have still to establish themselves in the football world.

Surely anyone at Ibrox, that knows of our past players, will be more than aware of the problems this can cause.

 

As for PLG not being able to control it, this I do not accept. Like any other work place, anyone under the influence of alcohol should be sent home. The football industry can take it further by fining players, dropping them from the team and exposing/embarrassing them in the media. All are effective deterrents from further abuse of the rules.

Taking it a step further and transfer listing the player would also provide the desired effect.

 

This accusation is part of the whole sorry episode in our clubs history that, along with the other revelations, the truth will never be revealled fully.

Going on what I've read, the problem seems to be much worse than I thought it was. I think a lot of the players need a serious reality check.

It is not a new problem really when you think through the years, you had:

Goram turning up for a new year OF game pissed out his head and when Theo Snelders shat it to play they had to stick Goram in the Sauna to sober him up.

 

Was it Robertson that they called the panelbeater because he trashed a car kicking it while drunk.

You also have your main goal scoring threat, Kris Boyd, currently banned from driving due to drink driving.

 

To be fair, I don't think it's a Rangers problem but is primarily a Scottish/UK 'culture' problem that many a foreign manager has been astonished by, not just Paul Le Guen. The nine in a row players often came out with 'the team that drinks together wins together' alluding to that socialising off the park helped performances off the park. Paul Gascoigne openly admits that is drinking problem really took hold during his spell at Rangers. I think this is one of the issues Le Guen had with Barry Ferguson as I know Barry was organising nights out for the players to help them 'bond', something he witnessed himself as a youngster during the 9iar years.

 

Sir Alex Ferguson, in his autobiography, mentions this same problem when he moved to Man United in 1986 and finding they had a drinking culture. Paul McGrath, Norman Whiteside and Bryan Robson are the players mentioned and it ended with McGrath and Whiteside being transferred out of Old Trafford.

 

In the end it's really upto the players. If they have any pride in themselves as professional footballers and 'athletes' then the occassional beer, glass of wine etc is fine. It's when it turns into drinking sessions and the problem becomes more severe that the problems start.

I agree with that mate and i will add, top footballers are athletes these days and have to eat and drink healthy if they wan't to perform at top level.

Yes everyone can have a few pints but getting drunk regularly must affect you on the pitch.

The difference between those players (possibly Ricksen aside) is that they also still had the QUALITY to be able to perform on the pitch - these imposters don't have the quality they think they have.

They obviously had the Quality within Scotland Craig but what could we have done in Europe if these players had stuck to the same practices and diets as the teams on the continent. We will never know.
