LEWIS MACLEOD is hoping he can get back to full fitness this summer so he can hit the ground running when Rangers start stage three of The Journey in the SPFL Championship.

The talented midfielder has endured almost four months of hell after a serious viral infection halted his League One campaign at the end of January. It was even suggested this could have had an impact on his blossoming football career.

Lewis, however, has remained upbeat and having come through his last round of tests with flying colours he can now see a light at the end of the tunnel as he targets a return to action this pre-season.

Although he still has to wait for a final assessment from medical staff Macleod is already taking part in light training at Murray Park as he gears up for an exciting year in Scottish football’s second tier.

Speaking to RangersTV he said: “I’ve been training for the last two weeks, just keeping myself ticking over.

“I was down in Chester the week before that and got some tests done. The results I think were positive so I’m just actually waiting on the official report to be sent up to confirm everything and what I’m meant to be doing.

“It’s looking like I should be back in pre-season and I would be absolutely delighted if that was the case.

“It was a huge relief when I actually went down and got the tests done and I felt good after it. To get that news was brilliant for me and I’m just looking forward now to the new season.”

Having missed a large chunk of last season Wishaw-born Lewis knows he will have to work hard to get match fit this summer and after he attends this year's NARSA Convention in Toronto he will do everything he can to be ready for the new campaign.

He said: “I’ve just got to train as much as I can. All the boys have been given programs and we’ve got to work by them and do the runs and what not that’s on them.

“For myself I just need to keep ticking over because I don’t know if I will go get straight into everything the boys are doing when I am back. But if I can get as fit as I can then I will be more than happy.

“I think the last two seasons have been fairly positive for me bar for the fact I’ve been injured for three months in both of them. Hopefully this new season I can be injury free.

“I’ve had my three months off so I’ll just work through the full summer and hopefully I can be fighting fit for pre-season.”

Having already won two league titles Lewis hopes he can make it three-in-a-row with Rangers in the Championship but he expects a tough challenge in what is sure to be a very competitive division.

He said: “I think we’ve just got to do what we’ve been doing and try to win games. It might not be the prettiest sometimes but as long as we’re winning games and not losing any points that’s the main thing.

“But with the teams that have come down, or could possibly come down, it looks like it’s going to be a good league and we’ll need to be at our best if we want to win it."

It'll be good to see him back in action!

I just hope the manager gives him back his place in central midfield when he's fully fit. None of this MacLeod on the left wing nonsense!
