forlanssister 3,114
andy steel;486580] or perhaps better one of my youtube favourites Emmylou Harris and one half of the Louvin Bros, Charlie Louvin Saw Emmylou Harris and Spyboy at Her Majesty's in Aberdeen with Buddy Miller as the warm up then later joining her on stage. Her Wrecking Ball album is the second greatest female country album after Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. A cracking cover of Steve Earle's sublime Goodbye on Wrecking Ball too as well as covers of Anna Magarrigile's Goin Back To Harlan and Gillian Welch's Orphan Girl . Maybe we should start a Gersnet C&W Club!
andy steel 0
Charlie Louvin? Looks like Alex MacDonald there! I love Emmylou, not entirely disconnected from the fact that she's a total doll. But what a voice. Her work with Gram Parsons is exceptional, two voices which shouldn't work together but do: In case anyone thinks this is going OT you should listen to the words of 'Bad Case of the Blues' above, and probably, the way things are going, the dangerous love affair of Emmylou & Gram as well. It fairly sums up The Rangers just now.
BrahimHemdani 1
A beautiful choice, Andy. Gram Parsons killed himself through drugs at age 26, in 1973. Fortunately the angel voiced and now silver haired Emmylou is still going strong. [/img] Try this with two of the original Hot Band, the aforementioned Albert Lee and Grammy Award-winning singer song-writer Rodney Crowell, listen out for Emmylou's comment at the end. BrahimHemdani 1
Emmylou Harris and the original Hot Band: James Burton (guitar), John Ware (drums) , Hank DeVito (pedal steel guitar) , Rodney Crowell (rhythm guitar), Emory Gordy Jnr (backing vocals) , Glen D Hardin (piano) perform this Buck Owens classic on The Old Grey Whistle Test. I think this version is much better than the 1977 reprise on the same show and you do get the Bob Harris intro! NB: I have read that Glen Hardin who played in the Crickets after Buddy Holly's death in 1959, was a first cousin on his mother's side of Charles Hardin Holley (Buddy Holly) but other sources say that he was not related at all. Ella Holley's maiden name was Drake; Buddy got his middle name from his paternal grandfather, John Hardin Holley. Buddy's first (real) name, Charles, came from his maternal grandfather, Charles Wesley Drake. Apparently Ella was a direct descendent of Sir Francis Drake. Buddy Holly dropped the "e" in Holley after Decca records misspelled his name on the 1956 contract. Executives of Warner Bros. Records (Reprise Records's parent company) told Harris they would agree to record her if she would "get a hot band". Harris did so, enlisting guitarist James Burton and pianist Glen Hardin, both of whom had played with Elvis Presley as well as Parsons. Burton was a renowned guitarist, starting in Ricky Nelson's band in the 1950s, and Hardin had been a member of The Crickets. Other Hot Band members were drummer John Ware, pedal steel guitarist Hank DeVito, and bassist Emory Gordy, Jr., with whom Harris had worked while performing with Parsons. Singer-songwriter Crowell was enlisted as a rhythm guitarist and duet partner.[3] Harris's first tour schedule originally dovetailed around Presley's, owing to Burton and Hardin's continuing commitments to Presley's band. The Hot Band lived up to its name, with most of the members moving on with fresh talent replacing them as they continued on to solo careers of their own. Burton left the Hot Band in 1976, choosing to remain with Elvis Presley's band, and was replaced by the legendary English guitarist Albert Lee (who later toured with the Everly Bros) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmylou_Harris It's not often that later artsits outdo the original version of a song, but in this case I think Buck Owens would have had to give second best to Emmylou.
