Smith started it, McCoist followed and like a virus it has spread through the club. CELTIC'S U17s have won this season’s City of Glasgow Cup Final after a narrow victory over Rangers at Celtic Park. Following a goalless first-half it was winger Aidan Nesbitt who scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute. The ball broke to the number seven inside the box and his drilled shot flew into the opposite corner of the net. Having won the competition four times in the previous five years it wasn’t to be for Billy Kirkwood’s kids this evening but again they can be proud of their efforts and can’t be faulted for the desire and commitment they displayed. The first half was relatively even in terms of possession with Celtic coming closest to scoring. On 15 minutes Regan Hendry picked up the ball 25 yards out and his left foot shot flew across Robby McCrorie and smacked off the Gers keeper’s far post. It then rebounded behind him before being cleared. Celtic skipper Joe Thomson then made a powerful run forward but when he played in striker Ciaran Lafferty his shot was wide of target. At the other end of the pitch Junior Ogen and Ryan Hardie were being a handful but most of their good work was outside the 18-yard box. Hardie had an early snap shot blocked and at the start of the second period he made another good run in behind Celtic’s defence. But just as he was about to shoot Jamie McCart made a perfectly-timed challenge. The ‘home’ side then pushed forward themselves and Gers number one McCrorie showed great technique when he dived to his left to palm away a close range flick by Lafferty after Nesbitt had crossed in from the left. On the hour mark the game could have gone either way and with three substitutions being made at this stage it was difficult to predict which team would come out on top. Celtic could, and should, have broken the deadlock on 69 minutes. Calvin Miller’s powerful shot was straight at McCrorie but when he dropped the ball at his feet Lafferty nipped in but could only chip his finish over the keeper and wide of the post. On 71 minutes however the deadlock was finally broken. The ball dropped to Nesbitt just inside the 18-yard box and his low shot went through several players before nestling in the far corner of the net, giving McCrorie no hope of stopping it. The Rangers youngsters now had to reply and with time running out they started to push more bodies up the park. Another ball over the top of Celtic’s defence sent Hardie sprinting clear but Colin McCabe did well to come off his line to make an initial save at the striker's feet. The ball then came back out to sub Lewis White but his low daisy cutter was blocked. The young Light Blues never gave up though and with just 60 seconds remaining a curling effort from Ryan Caird from 25 yards smashed off the crossbar. As it was this was as close as Rangers came to finding the net on the night and it was Celtic who lifted the trophy after the final whistle. The same u20's where a player was told he was getting taken off if he didn't stop playing football and start hitting it long to halkett and Gallagher.
