Lesson Learned In Brechin

CAMMY BELL reckons Rangers’ last trip to Brechin was a key one in their League One campaign as it made them realise how tough some teams in the division would be to beat.

 

The Light Blues got off to a terrible start in driving rain at Glebe Park in October as goals from Graham Hay and Jonathan Brown had the hosts 2-0 up inside 10 minutes.

 

Jon Daly pulled one back but Alan Trouten made it 3-1 at the break and it was only in the second half Gers came back to win.

 

Bilel Mohsni pulled one back before Nicky Law levelled with a shot from wide and Nicky Clark then grabbed the winner five minutes from the end.

 

While it wasn’t an impressive performance by any means, it was certainly a rousing comeback and, in Bell’s opinion, a valuable lesson learned too.

 

He said: “There were a few things said in the dressing room at half-time and it was a game in which we had to show a bit of character.

 

“We had to really fight back when we were 3-1 down and the manager got us going. It was a game where we really pushed on towards the end.

 

“We reacted to his words and Nicky Clark got us the goal which got us our victory. That was the most important thing that afternoon.

 

“We knew we’d let ourselves down but it was a huge victory because we realised there how difficult a task we faced in the league this season.

 

“The conditions were poor, the pitch was tight and there are some tough teams in the division. Brechin were fantastic on that occasion and they really raised their game.

 

“We had to really dig deep and find something in us. Thankfully we were able to do that and get the three points.”

 

Incredibly, Trouten’s strike is the last goal Rangers have conceded on their travels and they’ve played 1,135 minutes of away football since then without losing another one.

 

Bell was annoyed to let three strikes past him before the break but has been thrilled by the way Gers have reacted to that whenever they’ve left Ibrox in the following five months.

 

“It was really disappointing back then,” Bell added. “We analysed the goals after looking at them again and there were individual mistakes. As a team we made mistakes too.

 

“It was one of those games where we didn’t get off to a great start but we’ve tried to put things right since then and we’ve tried to keep as many clean sheets as we can.

 

“We had to move on and we’ve done that. We’ve been great away from home with our clean sheet record in the month since and hopefully we keep that up on Sunday.

 

“Our record is amazing and I think it’s great. We’ve faced a few hard teams and some bad conditions as well so it’s something to be proud of.

 

“We want to keep it up to the end of the season but we know it’ll be really difficult, starting this weekend.

 

“Our aim is to keep our concentration and we want to keep our clean sheets run going for as long as we can.”
