ian1964 10,777
DUNDEE United chairman Stephen Thompson last night went to war with the SFA and accused them of getting their facts wrong. Thompson swears the ruling body was “economical with the truth” in their account of ticket plans for the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers at Ibrox on April 12. In a statement the SFA insisted United were offered 11,063 tickets but turned them down in favour of being allocated the 8012-seat Broomloan Road Stand “in order to ensure maximum attendance”. But last night Thompson said: “The SFA statement is not factually correct. That’s a pretty serious thing to say but it’s what we believe. We are unhappy with this statement because it’s not our understanding of what took place. It is economical with the truth. “And the tone of the SFA’s statement to a member club, a club in the semi-finals of a national competition, and producing so many good young players for the national team, is just awful.” A request to shift the tie from Ibrox has already been turned down but United repeated their call for a neutral venue. Thompson added: “At least I put my name to any statements from Dundee United regarding this matter. “I made my feelings known about the venue and tickets on Saturday morning. It’s taken the SFA until Tuesday evening to respond but no one has put their name to it.” The SFA statement said: “Dundee United were made an initial offering of 11,063 tickets, allocated in the Broomloan Road Stand, the Govan West corner and a section of the Govan Stand Front and Rear. “The number was offered on the basis of Dundee United’s ticket sales for recent semi-finals. “The Dundee United official present stated that in order to ensure a maximum attendance, in the first instance the club would not require the additional allocation in the Govan West corner, Front and Rear and instead would prefer the Broomloan Road Stand, capacity 8012. “He was invited to revert to the club for confirmation but declined. “Notwithstanding the present allocation of 8012 – as requested by the club – Dundee United retain first option on the Govan West corner and a section of the Front and Rear, an additional 3051 seats.” But Thomson added: “We never said we’d take the initial allocation of 8000. We said sell the Broomloan Stand first then move on from there – we never said that’s all we wanted. “Both clubs should be treated equally and we don’t believe we have been. If we take 13,000 or 14,000 that would be a very good support.” United manager Jackie McNamara this week called for a 50-50 split of tickets but Thompson admitted his club couldn’t sell 20,000. The chairman said: “We won’t need 20,000 tickets but I don’t yet know the maximum number we will need. “It’s a shambles. The SFA agreed we should sell out one stand and see where we went from there.” http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/dundee-united-chief-stephen-thompson-3258606
