East Stirlingshire’s Tapping ‘racially abused’

Recommended Posts

EAST Stirlingshire head coach John Coughlin said last night that he substituted Jordan Tapping in yesterday’s 4-0 defeat by Peterhead at Balmoor after the 17-year-old schoolboy was reduced to tears by a sustained level of racial abuse from a section of the crowd.

Coughlin claimed the youngster was subjected to monkey noises and name calling from members of the home support situated behind the goal that Tapping was helping to defend in the second half.

Tapping, the cousin of Hearts midfielder Callum Tapping, scored an own goal in the League Two match and was taken off with 15 minutes remaining.

Coughlin said: “Firstly I want to say that what went on had no impact on the result of the game but it was a horrible incident. It was so bad that a couple of our players went to the referee to make sure that he was hearing it.

“He took no action at the time but he is including it in his match report. Jordan is just a kid who is still at school and was understandably upset and bewildered at what was getting shouted at him. I looked at him with about 20 minutes left and knew I had to get him off the pitch. By the time I did he was in tears. Whilst no one should have to deal with abuse, a more experienced player or person might have been able to handle it differently but in reality it is not Jordan’s problem.”

Referee Gavin Duncan is expected to report the matter to the SFA.

Coughlin added: “The Peterhead chairman Rodger Morrison came up and apologised to Jordan after the game. Whilst he acknowledged there had been a problem, no one can quite understand why no stewards were asked to go and get the fans doing it to stop, or even more appropriately, throw them out or get them arrested.

“Our players were very upset for Jordan and there was a lot of anger in our dressing room afterwards. They are all very much behind raising this incident as far as possible to show their support to their team-mate.” Tapping, pictured, was applauded off the pitch by his team-mates.

One supporter who was at the game said: “The ref stopped the game in the second half and spoke to the linesman. Then he seemed to call the head steward or someone like that. It was good couple of minutes he was speaking to the steward. The steward went over and spoke to someone behind the goal. It was just a single guy that they seemed to be speaking to. When [Tapping] went off, all the other East Stirling players were applauding him off the park.”

As of last night, the Scottish Professional Football League had received no complaint.

this is fucking outrageous. first of all, how difficult could it have been to spot and arrest the person or persons in a crowed of 400 who were causing such a noise that the ref stopped the game? Second, why were these people not arrested and lifted on the spot? third, why did the ref re-start the game?

Peterhead should be hammered for this, the head of stewarding should be sacked and the match commander should be put in charge of handing out parking tickets. You can, if you're of a mind to, make excuses for OF bigotry but there's none for monkey chants.

I highly doubt there would've been police working at the game on Saturday. A Div 3 club can't really afford to pay the police for 2 cops to attend the game.

The supporters have a huge deal to play in this. Name and shame the culprits. There's nothing the police can do without evidence. These arseholes need to be identified by the club and fans and then let the police do their job.

I'm genuinely surprised to hear that. I was under the (obviously mistaken) impression that there had to be a police presence whenever a certain number of people would gather for whatever event. The good thing is that they seem to have caught one of the clowns responsible.

He pled guilty and got a football banning order for a year which he'll probably breach on away games. If it went to trial and he was found guilty then his punishment would've been harsher.

If Peterhead have anything about them, they'll make sure that if he does go to away games he'll be collared. With crowds their size they'll be able to spot him.

The lower league teams rely on the stewards to "police" their games. If there's a major incident that requires police action, they'll phone and request it. A local unit will attend and take it from there.

Worst game I've EVER policed was Albion Rovers v Airdrie last season. The Airdrie fans (Section B) were an absolute disgrace to themselves and the club they "support". Thugs.

I should add that the court have possibly (hopefully) given him bail that he must sign on at a police station agreed by the court and the accused at, for example, 3.45pm every Saturday. If he doesn't do that then he gets traced and arrested.

Peterhead fan admits racial abuse of East Stirling footballer Jordan Tapping

]

Donnie Fraser, 19, shouted a racist insult at Jordan Tapping, 17, during East Stirling’s match at Peterhead on Saturday.

Jordan was so upset that his manager substituted him 15 minutes before the end and he left the pitch in tears.

Police arrested Fraser on Tuesday at the fish factory where he works and he appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday.

He admitted shouting a racially offensive comment likely to incite public disorder at Balmoor Stadium.

Fiscal depute Ruairidh McAlister said: “He was heard by persons round about him shout, ‘F*** you, you black c***’.

“This was directed at Jordan Tapping.”

The incident was not reported to police but officers began an investigation after some reports appeared in the media.

Fraser, of Peterhead, admitted the offence when interviewed by officers and said that there had been no reason for him to commit the offence.

Defence lawyer Garry Sturrock said his client was embarrassed and ashamed.
