McKay to stay at Ton until end of season

MORTON have agreed a deal to sign Rangers winger Barrie McKay on loan until the end of the season.

Tuesday 28/01/2014 by Chris Jack

The 19-year-old was one of new Cappielow chief Kenny Shiels' first signings when he replaced Allan Moore as boss, with the Gers kid agreeing a short-term deal last month.

The Ton's abandoned Championship clash with Queen of the South on Saturday was due to be his final match for Shiels' side.

But after holding talks with the Light Blues, Shiels has now struck a deal to keep McKay at Cappielow until the end of the campaign.

The capture of McKay is a major boost to the Ton as they bid to haul themselves away from the Championship relegation zone, with the Murray Park kid now set to benefit from an extended period of first-team football.

Shiels told SportTimes: "Barrie is coming back to us until the end of the season. It has been agreed. We'll do the paperwork and that will be it.

"He has made a good impact for us since joining us so it is great news for us.

"He is a good player so we are pleased to have him until the end of the season.

"It is good for us and good for Barrie. He is improving all the time, which is great.

"He has progressed well recently and hopefully there is plenty more to come from him between now and the end of the season."

Meanwhile, Morton are expected to today confirm prices for the re-arranged Doonhamers clash after the game was rescheduled for tomorrow night following the death of 74-year-old Ton supporter Andrew Kemp at Cappielow on Saturday.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Further details regarding the match and admission arrangements will be posted here tomorrow [Tuesday] once confirmed."

I think this will be good for McKay....

He showed a lot of promise last season, but clearly had a lot of learning still to do. Playing regularly @ Morton will allow him to get game time & develop as a player.

I feel he is a player who could do a pretty good job for us in the years to come. However it wouldn't surprise me if he returns to Ibrox, then never heard from.....

It can only be good for the lad to stay at Morton and get games against the teams at that level and it should be a very unusual experience for him to play for a team that's fighting a relegation battle. Maybe some cold harsh realities about Scottish football will hit home and the lad will return to us at the end of the season with a fresh outlook and some extra maturity. If he comes back in the right condition and frame of mind, then there's no reason why he couldn't get more game time for us next season.

Requested by the player as well. Speaks volumes.

At least it tells us that he's not completely daft because it's a bit of a no-brainer for him to stay out on loan at Morton. He'll be playing against a slightly better standard of opposition and also probably get more game time under his belt than he would with us at the moment. I'm sure he probably knows that it's a bit of a reality check too and that can only be good for his character.

Which needs plenty work. I sincerely hope he takes this chance.

Barrie Stays At Morton

Written by Andrew Dickson

BARRIE McKAY will spend the rest of the season on loan to Morton after paperwork to extend his temporary stay there was completed this afternoon.

The Rangers winger went to Cappielow on an initial one-month deal before Christmas and has done well in his appearances with the Greenock side.

His highlight so far has been scoring the winning goal for them at Livingston on January 18, only their third league success of the 2013/14 and their first on the road.

McKay, who signed a five-year contract with the Light Blues last term, is very much part of Ibrox manager Ally McCoist’s plans in the long term.

But for now he’ll continue assisting Kenny Shiels’ team in its bid to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Ton currently sit eight points adrift of the play-off place and 15 from third-bottom Alloa, albeit they do at least have one more game to play than ninth-placed Cowdenbeath.

McKay was a squad regular at Gers last season and made 41 appearances including 20 starts before he broke his foot in April. He also scored four times.

This term he has just one goal from four substitute outings for the League One leaders, that coming in the Ramsdens Cup against Berwick back in August.

McKay is hopeful staying with Morton will make him a better player when he reports back to Murray Park in the summer.

The 19-year-old told the Evening Times: “First-team football was a big factor in my decision. I really want to play and need to be playing at my age.

“I am happy at Morton so there was no point going back to Rangers and not getting a sniff. If I am out playing games it will benefit me and Rangers in the long run.

“When I go back to Rangers, I will return a better player. I spoke to the manager and he was happy for me to stay out on loan and play first-team games.

“He never said I wouldn’t get a chance at Rangers but I know he has brought in a lot of good players and has a big squad. I am happy to stay at Morton until the end of the season.”
