By being champions don't they always give themselves an advantage in qualifiers. They always seem to get easy draws, Arsenal being their last hard one.

Methinks they sneaked into the last group phase via an extra-time winner against these Eastern no-names?

Under the new system the "Champions" route is easier although it means an extra round, because the opponents in the Play-Off round (4th Qualifying) will be the Champions of Denmark, Switerland, Austria and Cyprus (though Austria and Cyprus have certainly improved a lot in recent years); whereas the "non-Champions" route means playing the 3rd or 4th placed team from England, Spain, Italy, Germany or Portugal, which is likely to be a much tougher proposition.
