Unfortunately a great number of our fans have no appetite for building from youth and accepting the short term consequences. A large percentage would rather we buy into success - albeit on a hit and miss basis. Think of the horrendous procession of misfit strikers we have blown a fortune on over the years.

The point right now is that we had to use youngsters these past months and some have come good. I have no idea how the current youth players would improve our first team, simply because hardly anyone knows them or sees them play ... bar McCoist and Co.. We had and have the luxury to buy success ... or at least seasoned pros. Hence, I reckon that McCoist will cast a look over our best youngsters, but also looks at the same age group in teams which simply have to field these young (and sometimes talented) players out of necessity. Thus his proclaimed interest in McNulty or Gunning. These people have, as opposed to our youngsters, already seen competitive football and proved themselves at that level. It is far from good for our youngsters, of course. Hence, the idea of having a "farm team" in the lower leagues is one that should not be ignored. It works very well in Germany, even though, they acually play "2nd strings" in the lower leagues, rather than taking over e.g. Clyde.

As for the current team, we should keep in mind that nigh all of these players have come for free and AFAIK, McCoist only looks to add freebies still. We should be able to sustain the wages, of course, which demands sensible players as well as a decent loan-policy. Which is something that needs to be addressed by the CEO. If no Scottish team is able to afford this, how about shifting them to e.g. Carlisle or some northern based Conference teams? We could easily shift, loan or release 10 players during the break without weakening the team that much right now.
