Dave King urges Rangers to invite PM onto board

Recommended Posts

Dave King has told the factions battling for control of Rangers that he is ready to start talks over an Ibrox cash injection.

The current regime, spearheaded by Sandy and James Easdale, are expected to secure enough votes to retain their posts ahead of Thursday's crucial AGM.

Paul Murray and his fellow requisitioners Malcolm Murray, Alex Wilson and Scott Murdoch will seek to secure directorships whilst ousting the current board.

However, as a fresh row broke out over the alleged leaking of sensitive information concerning proxy votes to the BBC, King urged all parties to turn their attention to the looming cash crisis at the club.

‘The concern I still have is what is going to happen after the AGM?’ King told Sportsmail. ‘Whether Paul’s group or the Easdale consortium wins, then the question is still one of: “What happens next?” Where is the funding going to come from?

‘I said after my recent trip to Scotland that I intended to await the outcome of the AGM. Irrespective of how it turns out, I am still willing to be party to a solution going forward. Both financially and in terms of a strategic direction for the football club.’

King spearheaded talks aimed at sharing power and reaching a peace accord during discussions with the Easdales and Murray in October.

Those talks foundered together with plans for the South African-based businessman to become chairman, amid suggestions the Easdales were unhappy with the idea.

Insisting he is quite prepared to kickstart talks with the Greenock bus tycoons - or Murray - over a cash injection, King added: ‘I really don’t care who it is I have to talk to. I have had no indication the Easdales would not work with me. The conversations I had were encouraging enough.

‘In their position, there was a lot of uncertainty, but I regarded the discussions as constructive and something that could be continued. Ultimately, that is a decision they will have to make depending on how they see things after the AGM.

‘But I have indicated that I am available for further discussions once the dust has settled and at least I will know who I am talking to.

‘Whoever is in control is going to be in control. I am willing to deal with whoever is there.’

Last week Sandy Easdale claimed to have an unnamed wealthy investor waiting in the wings. King says he is not the investor concerned, but would be open to an approach.

‘I have indicated to them or anyone else that I am happy to be part of things. But I have had no specific discussions.

‘We have had wealthy investors standing on the sidelines for five years now — and none of them have actually got to the point of physically putting money into the club. So one has always got to treat these comments with some caution.’

Even if the current board cling to power after a bitter war of words, King has called for Murray to be appointed to the board as an olive branch towards fans.

‘I would strongly urge all shareholders – including the Easdale group – that even if they can’t find a way of voting for Paul Murray’s nominees, they should at least try and get Paul on the board,’ he said. ‘Paul is a good guy, he knows the club very well, he is a very experienced businessman and he is 100 per cent behind the club for all the right reasons. It would be very nice for the fans, as well, to think there might be some form of consensus breaking out.’

Businessman Jim McColl, a backer of the requisitioners, also believes Murray and King would be good additions to the board - but is adamant that finance director Brian Stockbridge should go.

He said: ‘I would like to see Paul Murray on board, that would provide a strong basis to move forward and I would hope Dave King would be invited on to the board in the future, he would also be a good addition.

‘There are some good people on the board now. The new chief executive Graham Wallace is a man of integrity, a competent individual, and I think he is strong enough. But I would like to see Brian Stockbridge voted out, he presided over a huge cash outflow and there are questions around that which haven’t been answered.’
