Will our support back an independent Scottish army in the same way we back a British army? I have my doubts, which would question the legitimacy of most of the arguments in this thread. It's laughable that people think the modern armed services exist to defend our freedoms and liberty. It's even more laughable that people use that as a reason for what happened at Ibrox.

 

Comparing doctors and nurses to trained killers, is disgusting. They are literally opposite ends of the human spectrum, and not worthy of comparison. While there is no doubt that a "country" such as ours requires a reasonable "defence" force, I'm not sure they deserve the adulation they receive. Murder is murder, be it state sponsored or otherwise. This whole "just following orders" justification is a cop-out of personal responsibility.

 

I recently had a member of my family kidnapped for ransom in Nigeria by a mixed group of gangsters and religious fanatics, he was rescued by the Nigerian British trained ( and i suspect some British forces) anti-terrorist group. Some of the kidnappers were killed, but he was rescued unhurt and is now back with the family. Thank god someone has to stand up to terrorists to keep us safe., the British forces get my thanks and respects, as do Nurses and Doctors who also have to clear up after terrorist have done their dirty work.

I'm not sure it can be called ultra leftist to have some issues with the army.

 

I am a bit uneasy with the media worship of the armed forces these last years, because I think what lies behind it is the need to recruit troops rather than any actual feelings of pride.

Dont like the inference here that it is something that needs defended or was unsavoury. Just because the media/journos try and tarnish it we do not have to take their line on it.

yeah, no worries mate. People usually bail out when they have to explain why we're in Afghanistan; You're not alone.

 

That totally misses the point, which is that the soldiers have to go where their political masters send them.

 

The rights and wrongs of Afganistan, or any other conflict for that matter, should not be an issue in debating whether or not it is appropriate to honour our troops and the best maner in which to do so.
