Derek Johnstone: If Green must leave to sort club out then he must ... and quickly

Recommended Posts

RANGERS fans have endured many a torturous day during the last couple of years but Saturday will take some beating.

Losing to Forfar in the first round of the League Cup was unacceptable but the aftermath was unbelievable. There are serious problems at the club just now and the supporters need answers.

The return of Charles Green as a 'consultant' on Friday caught everyone by surprise. I find it very strange that he is back. The big question is why?

I have said all along that Rangers need to get their house in order, starting at the top. There is too much on the front pages about Gers again. We thought we had seen it all but it is back again and it is Mr Green, who shot off very quickly, that is back again and causing mayhem.

I thought he did a decent job while he was there the first time, the IPO was a success and £22million was raised but he would have made money from Rangers. His biggest problem is that he says things he shouldn't regarding things that have nothing to do with him.

What the manager is doing is nothing to do with him. If he wants to talk football, he does it with the manager in private. Coming out with the things he has done does nobody any good.

Relations between him and Ally have broken down at a time when Rangers need everyone singing off the same hymn sheet. That is not going to happen now and Ally is quite right to have come out and said what he has done.

Football is his job and it is up to him to fix it. He knows that if the team struggles then his job will be on the line. He doesn't need Green telling him.

He is a fan, he has been there as a player, coach and now a manager, he knows what is expected. He needs results and his team to play entertaining football and if he doesn't produce it, he knows he will be under real pressure.

Green doesn't know what the club is all about, he walked away and all of a sudden he is back having pops. The fans aren't happy, the manager isn't happy and the players won't be happy either. He has come back and everyone will be against him. I don't understand why he is here.

If it takes Green and his men and investors to leave the club for things to be sorted out then that is what needs to happen, and quickly. The fans are sick of this whole fiasco and the negativity coming from the boardroom. We have to get the right people in charge.

There is too much chaos around the club just now. You just can't have that, especially at a club this size. We need people who will channel all their energy into taking Rangers forward for the good of the club, not themselves.

We need Rangers men on board, they have to be good businessmen as well, who know the history of the club and what it takes to move them forward.

This is not just any old business. People may be fantastic in their own professional lives but we need guys who know football and know Rangers, the principles and the history of the club. The quicker all this is sorted, the quicker Rangers can start to move forward again.

I said weeks ago that we shouldn't rule out Dave King making a move. He is someone who will be there for the long haul, not to make money and get out. The likes of Dave, Paul Murray and Jim McColl know more about what is going on inside the club than we do. They are all big Rangers fans and are concerned about the future of the club.

All fans want is the right men in charge and change needs to happen. This can't go on and on and on. It has to happen quickly and things need to settle down.

We are speaking more about the boardroom than the team and it all needs sorted. You can't have people having pops at the manager and the players. It has to stop right away.

If you look back through the history of Rangers, it has always been Rangers men that have led the club. We need that back.

We need people with good principles and a love for the club to be running it again. If it takes time to get the right people then Rangers fans will be prepared to wait. But we can't hang on forever. They are fed up with all this nonsense.

How many directors and comings and goings have we had recently? We have had people back-stabbing each other. It is just not good enough for a club of Rangers' stature.

People around the country and looking at Rangers and thinking, 'what the hell is going on at that club?' and they are right to say that. Rangers' dirty laundry has to stop being washed in public. All this nonsense needs to end.

There is a lot of ifs, buts and maybes at the moment. The fans are delighted that Walter Smith is there as chairman and he is so important just now. I would imagine he would not have been happy with the comments of Charles Green.

If he was the manager and Green had said the same things, he would have got the same blast back that Ally has given him, and rightly so. Walter has got to get round the table with the directors and try and sort things out or the club is in trouble.

These are worrying times for Rangers fans. There is another battle going on at the heart of the club and it is only once the right people are in charge that we can finally move on and look forward.

If you look back through the history of Rangers, it has always been Rangers men that have led the club. We need that back.

Lawrence Malborough didn't even follow football never mind Rangers, Murray was an Ayr Utd man, David Holmes a Falkirk fan. That takes you back to about 1985, which older Bears may note with a jolt is now just short of 30 years of our history!

They don't have to be Rangers men, they just have to be competent. Both would be ideal but it's not a necessity.
