A Celtic youth player has been arrested accused of being in possession of a knife.

Ryan Caird has been detained by Strathclyde Police officers in South Lanarkshire.

The 16-year-old is accused of having the offensive weapon in Cambuslang at around 7.40pm on Saturday.

He is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court from custody on Monday in relation to the incident.

A police spokeswoman said on Monday: "At around 7.40pm on Saturday, a 16-year-old male was arrested and detained in custody for allegedly being in possession of a knife in the Cambuslang area. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today."

Caird plays for the under-16s Celtic side and has also been selected to play for his country at youth level.

He was part of a Scotland under-16 squad that took part in the International Development Tournament in Portugal earlier this month.
