Nice words from Hemmings as he prepares to find a new club

Recommended Posts

"Hemmings said: â??Iâ??m gutted to be leaving the club as Iâ??d hoped I might be offered something else but Iâ??m looking forward to a new challenge now.

â??I need to get games and thatâ??s my aim but Iâ??ll always keep an eye open for Rangersâ?? results as I love the club and I wish the boys there all the best for the new campaign.â?"

Hope he gets a club and can get the game time he needs to develop his career. Very unlikely he would have got that at Ibrox given that we've gone and signed two new strikers so its for the best that he moves on.

Good luck to the lad.

Longer term....could Hemmings have been the better option over Jon Daly???

I am getting the feeling that we will very quickly fall back into our old ways - only a short term view!!! We will probably get a couple of good seasons out of Daly, then he'll either move on for nowt or disappear into the reserves. Hemmings is still developing and could still be improving over the next 3-4 years, while still retaining some value (dependant on success...). He did well while out on loan, got called back early, then never really got a chance. I thought he looked decent when he did play.

All the best Kane!!!

Not wanting to steal the thread ... still, Nicky Clark is the one we bought to "replace" Hemmings as a future striker. We still have the rather young Little, not sure about Naismith, but e.g. Ryan Hardie is also a pretty good and lethal youngster. Elfideldo might throw in a few more names.

IMHO the club feels that we need Daly as a towering centre-forward a la Hateley to get us more of an advantage in the lower leagues. McCulloch is still there (at 35?), but was injured for a long spell and his and Daly's versatility will be a bonus to McCoist. Sometimes it will be silky soccer that will see us brush the opposition aside. But sometimes you also need powerhouses like Daly. I for one hope we fill in all the ranks with people suitable for all scenarios.

I've always been of the thinking that we only require really exceptional youngsters and the vast majority will just not make the Rangers grade. It's not their fault and not Rangers fault, just the nature of the beast.

It will always be easier to fill a team of players that have performed well elsewhere while trying our best to produce a few outstanding players of our own, every few years. It's only once in many, generations you'll have an amazing crop of youngsters like the legendary Fergie's Fledglings and Busby's babes. It’s also relevant that the latter were augmented quite a few experienced, world class players.

We may go back to previous habits but it has to be remembered that those habits seemed to bring us a wealth of silverware and we did it in an affordable way for much of our history. In fact the first half of the eighties could be noted for a failure at a time where we massively underspent on the squad while we rebuilt Ibrox.

1986 was a momentous watershed which brought us amazing success and almost doubled our attendances. If you remember the eighties, you'll realise using your financial clout is a hard model to argue against – provided you don’t spend more than you can afford.

There always has to be room in the squad and team to play two or three youngsters, so they can develop proper experience, but I think last season was a chance to fill half the team with rookies due to the lower than standard of opposition than we're used to. However, although that strategy won us the league, the standard of football on display did not go down well with a large and vocal section of fans.

I don't think you can blame McCoist for doing something a bit different this season now that he has more of a chance to bring in players – even with the illegal transfer ban.

Despite being some of the best in the country, I'm not convinced most of our kids are of the quality that our fans want to watch - although it doesn't help that some of our more senior players have been gash or mediocre, but then it's difficult to say how they are coping with so much inexperience in the team.

I think the squad looks much stronger already for next season and we've learned a lot about our debutants of last season, and will have more of an idea of who might make the grade.

In particular, Barrie McKay and Lewis McLeod will not have done their chances any harm and Andrew Little is probably now thought of as an established, first team player.

In any case, if we get shot of Boca, Goian and Alexander; then Crabari, McCulloch and Daly aside, it will be a fairly young squad.
