Fans Can Drive Us On

CRAIG MATHER believes Rangers can only keep rising after experiencing the passion of their fans once again at this weekendâ??s NARSA convention in San Francisco.

The interim chief executive arrived in California yesterday and was blown away by the welcome he received from Light Blues followers who had travelled from around the world.

After taking part in a question and answer session with many of them for nearly an hour in the morning, he later addressed a packed audience at the eventâ??s gala dinner.

And Mather is convinced the momentum they can build can keep the club on the right path as it strives to get back to the levels it has been accustomed to playing at for so many years.

After so much turbulence at Gers in the last few weeks, streaks of positivity are starting to creep through.

After four new recruits for the forthcoming season were announced, Walter Smith was named as the new non-executive chairman at Ibrox.

Potential for a more stable period is most definitely there â?? and Mather knows the clubâ??s loyal fans can play such a significant part in that process.

Speaking before almost 500 people, Mather said: â??Rangers are on their way back, make no mistake about that.

â??I donâ??t believe this club can be deflated because Iâ??ve seen you people in action and Iâ??ve felt the passion you have for Rangers.

â??Iâ??ve marvelled at the number of people who have turned up week after week in the Third Division. It has been absolutely fantastic and no other fans would have done that.

â??I am truly humbled to be among you and to be part of the rebuilding of Rangers. Without you, the club would have gone under and thereâ??s no doubt about that.

â??Iâ??ve had to stop myself at times because the support from every single individual worldwide, not just in this room, has been immense.

â??To see it in full flow has been awesome. Hearing people in full voice and seeing them in full colour has been a spectacle to behold.

â??Weâ??ve had to fight through some very, very difficult times but you are, by far, the best support any club could ever have, anywhere in the world.

â??The interesting thing for me is that directors of some clubs believe they are the voice and the important people. Theyâ??re wrong â?? very, very wrong.

â??You, the fans, are all important and the Rangers directors would have to be deaf and blind not to know that by now.

â??Weâ??ve experienced one of the most uplifting periods in our history and our voice has been heard all over.

â??Rangers would not have been saved without you and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done and hopefully everything you will continue to do.â?

Mather touched on the issue of taking the clubâ??s detractors to task and alluded to the fact he feels Rangers must choose their battles with wisdom.

He was keen to stress those at the top of the clubâ??s hierarchy are aware of who has tried to hurt the Light Blues in the past.

And he highlighted that Gers will stand up for themselves and strike back â?? but only when the time is right.

Mather added: â??There will be times when you want us to tackle our enemies and it will seem like weâ??re somehow reluctant to do so or that we donâ??t care.

â??You might believe we donâ??t feel hurt to the same extent as you but Iâ??m here to tell you we do.

â??Sometimes you have to wait. We have chosen and we will continually choose the right moment to strike.

â??Please, please never believe that I or any other directors donâ??t know the names of the people who have tried to damage this club. We know all of them.

â??We know what each one tried to do and I can assure you we will never, ever forget about that.

â??Rangers is on its way back now and itâ??s more alive and united than ever. These gatherings show that and you are powerful proof of that.â?

This part is very encouraging. Patience will be required, it appears.

Good comments but we've heard it all before. Actions speak louder than words may well be a cliché but it's still true.

Time will tell whether or not Mather is more active than others.

I'd say mather's initial work in being part of the team bringing in players has been pretty successful. None of the 48 hours nonsense of last summer, deals announced early and with minimal fuss. I'm skeptical of mather's credentials as CEO but he's made a reasonable start.

Many lapped it up from Whyte and then from Green. Tell the people what they want to hear and you get a free hand to rape and pillage. And he did go the usual ott when playing to the audience.

Time will indeed tell if the latest in the line is any different. If he really put in £1m and his pal Chuck has 8% for a mere £50k it could be interesting though.
