That story mentions his problems but doesn't tell us if he's cured or has it manageable. I don't think many clubs are willing to take a punt on him any more hence his unemployment. I would guess with our situation we're in a position to offer him a pretty liveable wage (1-1.5k?) as occasional cover for Wallace which will be of a decent enough standard for the first and second divisions. With the lack of offers elsewhere it's a no-brainer for a guy who may otherwise have slipped down the divisions in a less glamorous and lucrative way, or even retired from playing at such an early age. So to have someone as injury prone as Smith in that number seems a bit of a gamble. I would prefer that some of the younger players were used as the back ups for players like Wallace.
