The Discredited Discredited Journalist: Why Jon Daly, from Dublin, is news at Rangers

Recommended Posts

I couldn't give a shit if we had 11 irish catholics playing for us, as long as they are good enough - if not, then they'll get the same treatment as some of the pish I've watched playing for us in the past. Then no doubt I'll be classed as a bigot by the press.

CHANGING THE GOALPOSTS

Perceptions, perceptions....

1980's: "Rangers will never sign catholics."

Mo Johnstone

1990's: "Rangers don't sign enough catholics."

Amoruso, Gattuso, Neil McCann, et al

2000's: "Rangers don't sign the right (i.e. Irish) catholics"

John Daly signs for Rangers

FFS are there any more "hoops" you'd like us to jump through until we can be treated equally with every other club? Or is it just too easy for lazy, discredited hacks and our "pure as the driven snow" opponents from across the city to keep throwing that tag at us. Open your eyes and move on Spiers, we have.

Matter of fact, they actually gone as far as him being the first "Irish Catholic from Dublin". There are only so many counties and cities left ...

I had the smile at the "high-profile" though. He was never an ROI international as far as I am aware, as opposed to Cork-lad Alan Smith, whom we signed months ago.

I always thought another part of the reason that Rangers didn't sign many Catholics was that all the best ones went straight to Celtic - and why would we want second best?

If we're interested in say the top 50 players in Scotland ie 25 each for the OF, then at 18% Catholic that makes a maximum of 9 players we'd be interested in - an all of them would probably interest Celtic and in their usual sectarian zeal, would choose to play for them over Rangers.

People in Scotland always seem to forget that it's not an equal street. Celtic have always got off because they played "some" Protestants. However the chances of a player being Catholic was just under one in six but for an example lets make it the same chance of throwing a one on a dice.

Now would it be that unusual to throw 11 times and never throw a one? A tiny bit maybe. However what are the odds of throwing 11 times and coming up with a one eight or nine times? Far more unusual.

On average Rangers should have played two Catholics in every team and for a while played none. One average Celtic should have played NINE Protestants and for a while played two or three. Which is the worse statistic, especially when taking my first point into account?

Maybe we should check the average statistics for the last 25 years for players, managers and board members, and see which club should be investigated by the Equal Opportunities Commission...

You see, they would not see sense here, but blather about this being proof of the supression of Catholicism in Scotland ...
