Rangers chairman Malcolm Murray to 'contest' removal attempt

Recommended Posts

Rangers chairman Malcolm Murray will contest an attempt to remove him from the board.

In an announcement to the stock exchange on Thursday, Rangers confirmed they had received a request for a general meeting.

It is understood the move has been made in the name of Blue Pitch Holdings, a firm that has a 6.14% stake in Rangers and one of the original investors in the consortium led by Charles Green that purchased the clubâ??s assets through a newco last summer.

The meeting is being requested in an attempt to remove Mr Murray and fellow non-executive director Phil Cartmell from their roles.

In the announcement, Rangers said: "The board of Rangers has noted the recent press speculation regarding a requisition for a general meeting.

"The board confirms that it has received such correspondence and is seeking to establish the validity of this requisition. Further announcements will be made as appropriate."

Under companies legislation, Rangers have 14 days in which to call the general meeting, where it is believed Blue Pitch is seeking to have McGillâ??s Buses operator and club shareholder James Easdale, as well as Mr Greenâ??s associate Christopher Morgan, appointed as directors.

STV News understands that Mr Murray will contest the move, while the move requires the support of at least 51% of shareholders in the company for it to be passed.

The meeting is being called by Blue Pitch Holdings as it has more than 5% of the voting rights through its four million shares in Rangers International Football Club plc. Previous media reports suggested Dubai equity investor Arif Naqvi was behind the firm, but former Rangers chief executive Mr Green stated that the "legal beneficiary" of Blue Pitch is Mazen Houssami, while Mr Naqvi had decided not to invest.

It comes after Mr Green and commercial director Imran Ahmad left their roles at Rangers after links between them and former owner Craig Whyte were revealed. The pair have denied any wrong-doing in their dealing with Mr Whyte, while he claimed in a letter warning of legal action, delivered to them in the weeks before the £22.5m stock market flotation of Rangers, that the pair were a "front" for him.

Craig Mather has been appointed interim chief executive of the Ibrox club, while legal firm Pinsent Masons is leading an independent inquiry into the conduct of Mr Green and Mr Ahmad in relation to Mr Whyteâ??s allegations.

Earlier this month Mr Murray lost a vote of no confidence from fellow board members at Rangers, as they demanded that he stand down once the results of the probe into Mr Green and Mr Ahmad's dealings has concluded.

Why is all of this happening before the results of the Whyte/Green/Ahmad investigation are published?

The CF revelations may make the investigation irrelevant especially if he/she carries out the Wikileaks type threat to dump thousands of documents.
