Gordon Strachan: Celtic & Rangers will leave Scottish football in next 10 years

STRACHAN made the shock prediction last night as he spoke at a football forum in Manchester - and said he sees the Glasgow duo playing in a 38-team Euro league soon.

GORDON STRACHAN last night predicted Celtic and Rangers will be gone from Scottish

football and in a European League within 10 years.

The Scotland manager produced his stunning forecast while speaking at the SoccerEx European Football Forum in Manchester.

Ironically, Strachan was part of a group which took part in a Q&A session on the future of Scottish football and the SFA modernisation plans.

However, while addressing the auditorium, Strachan shocked the audience by suggesting that very future may be without the two major clubs from Glasgow.

Strachan said: â??They will end up in European leagues. In 10 years time, there will be two European leagues where the big players and owners from all around the world will decide things.

â??Celtic and Rangers will be in it, thatâ??s the way I see it going. Thatâ??s the future and the way it will go, with maybe 38 of the top teams.

â??Sorry if Iâ??m killing everyoneâ??s dream but Iâ??ve said over the last 10 years that I think that is the way it will go.

â??Perhaps 38 teams break away with two divisions and the owners will try and coral all of that sponsorship and look after it that way.

â??Thatâ??s the way Celtic and Rangers will get there. Until then, we can generate money and make sure Scottish football is healthy before that comes along.â?

Strachan was flanked on the platform by SFA chief executive Stewart Regan, who immediately attempted to defuse talk of a Celtic and Rangers defection.

Regan said: â??If we spent as much time promoting our own game and developing our own players as we do on trying to create exit strategies, and looking over the fence at what might be down the road, weâ??d be world class.

â??We have an organisation focused on improving and modernising. There is already a European league. Itâ??s called the Champions League.

â??Itâ??s very successful and allows European competition to live alongside domestic competition, with all the tribalism and rivalries.

â??In order for change to happen, you need willing bedfellows. That doesnâ??t exist at the moment and the clubs need to spend more time focusing on building up the game and developing what we have in Scotland and getting it back to where it needs to be.â?

Rod Petrie, vice-chairman of the SFA, was also on the platform. He said: â??You can tell Gordon is not in charge of policy at the SFA.â?

We have heard this so many times from various people but there's no concrete evidence to back it up. England don't want us despite what Charlie Moonbeams likes to tell us and a European League in my opinion is a long long way off

In fairness to Strachan the article is very misleading as he was talking down the prospect of Rangers and Celtic moving down south. Something which the article conveniently left out, but confusingly left in the comment about 'killing everyoneâ??s dream'. Strachan was only sticking to his guns and repeating a view he's held for a number of years.

I'm surprised where we've got this type of sensationalst shabby journalism with predictable sh:te being spouted by one of our favourite hate figures that we would choose to have a go at Strachan.

I didn't really mean to have a go at Strachan and you're right about the journo who wrote the article.

Stewart Regan's comments are actually more important than Strachan's comments because yet again Regan looks like a clown who's unfit for the position as SFA chief executive.

My comment on Strachan talking rubbish was actually more light hearted than anything and something that spilled over from other comments he's been making recently (about the Scotland squad) where I've thought he was either talking rubbish or taking the mickey.
