Next seasons defence; Rangers eye Cathcart & Bikey

Recommended Posts

McCoist is keen on the out-of-contract central defender but canâ??t make a move until Blackpool decide if they are going to take up the option on his contract for a further 12 months.

The Championship club donâ??t have to tell the 24-year-old, above, of their intentions until next month.

Cathcart has lost his top team spot to Kirk Broadfoot and Gary MacKenzie since new boss Paul Ince took over at Bloomfield Road. McCoist wants to team up Cathcart with Middlesbroughâ??s Andre Bikey at the heart of his defence, but again the Gers must wait and see if Boro take up their option on Bikey.

Rangers are also looking at a number of overseas targets including Honduran international Arnold Peralta of Vida and Mexican striker Alan Pulido of Tigres. Both are due to become free agents this summer.

By all accounts Broadfoot has had a decent season (and is being considered for their PotY) so the lad Cathcart may not be that bad.

We have to be careful in buying players for the short-term journey compared to ones we'd like to keep for the top league.

Cathcart is a former NI youth POTY, came through the Man Utd youth system, made 30 EPL appearances for Blackpool and having been NI U21 captain, now at the age of 24 has 14 full caps. At least his CV looks good.

He may have had a decent season however a quick browse through the Blackpool forums suggest that the they are far from impressed by him (Broadfoot).

Oh, we were too. Did not stop him from becoming one of those elusive few in a Rangers jersey to reach a European Cup Final. A feat far better players than him did not manage.

Does that tell you much about his ability? Maybe not. But it probably tells you that in a correct environment players get along well with one another and form a decent enough partnership on the field of play. If that's for the benefit of the team, the individual ability might (sic!) not be that important.

I do wonder how these transfer target snippets make it to the media hacks ...

I guess that would mean that Boca and Goian are not coming back, if we get Cathcart and Bikey.

Just as an aside, I saw a lot of Cathcart when Blackpool were in the EPL and he was well out of his depth. To me he is another Perry, not sure that he would add enough to the team. However, a partnership of Bikey and Boca would be fantastic (all IMHO of course!)
